wooden train sets

we'd like to get the baby a starter wooden train for a set we'll contribute to over the next few birthday/holidays and maybe get a table for the two kids for Christmas next year.

What brand would you recommend? Are any brands interchangeable on the tracks?

We are on the same path, and we started with the Melissa and Doug Figure 8 Train Set. We will be getting additional track for Xmas this year, and hopefully get a table after we move next year.

We've got a whole bunch of ikea train sets. Inexpensive and we love them.

He got the Melissa & Doug Figure 8 last year, and we are building onto it this year. Most of the "big" brands are compatible with one another and most wooden pieces.

Yep yep. All the wooden tracks are pretty interchangable I think.

We bought DS an imaginarium set for his birthday, which just happens to be around the time of all the cyber sales so it was 60% off. So far everything seems like good quality at a cheaper price than the Thomas, etc sets.
