hard poop

For the past week LO's poop has been hard...ploppable in CD term...and he has poop in almost every diaper.  Not a lot, just one blob or so.  He doesn't seem constipated, but he has been crankier than usual.  He's still taking 24 oz. of formula, but does 3 meals a day.  Is this normal for anyone else?

Re: hard poop

  • Prunes, apples or pears help a lot with this.

  • Apples I find more constipating..Definitely try prune juice.

  • For DS we had to make sure he was getting prunes every other day.  This has gotten things back to normal.  Also as others have said pears, peaches, plums, prunes... All of the p fruits help out!
  • Prunes, prunes, prunes! It always works. Whenever I inadvertently give DD too much banana, prunes get things moving again.

  • Prunes and pears. And Karo syrup, a little in their formula. If he is eating three meals, his poop may be more solid than before. More like adult poop. Unless he is grunting and complaining, he probably isn't constipated. But the prunes or pear purees work a dream, usually less than a day.

  • My doctor said it's not the amount, but the consistancy of the poop that tells if they're constipated.  You would tend to think your LO isn't constipated b/c he's going a tiny bit in every diaper.  But if it's hard and not soft like normal, then they probably are constipated.  Like most of the PP's said, we always give prunes which seem to do the trick.  You could try some apple juice, too, if you are ok with giving that.
