Pre-School and Daycare

Christmas gifts for day care staff...

This is our first year in a Day Care center around Christmas-time.  I thought of just buying a gift for the director, and DD's main teacher.  Is that enough?  Do we even need to do a gift at all?

I wasn't sure if I needed to buy for the other teachers too who might be with DD throughout the day, but isn't the main teacher, like the ones who just fill in, or cover for the last couple of hours of the day, etc.  If so, that adds about 4-5 more people to my list!

WWYD?  Thanks...

Re: Christmas gifts for day care staff...

  • We usually made cookies for the whole staff. It was a small school (only 6 staff members) and we were on a limited budget, but they seemed to appreciate it and DD got to help.

  • Don't give a gift for director. Not necessary. I give gift cards to her teachers.

  • I usually only give gifts to his 2 main teachers. I give each a little gift bag and fill it with cookies, a little item like a picture frame and a gift certificate for $20.

I'm just curious as to why I should skip the director?  I'm new to this...thanks.

In my experience the director has limited interactions with the children. Their job is to manage the place.

  • When my kids were in daycare, they had many teachers - 2 main teachers but then the floater teachers that covered days off and such.  The 1st few years we were there (6 years total), a parent arranged a group gift for the whole center so parents would just contribute and then the person in charge would take the money and with assistance from the director, the teachers and staff all got gift cards and depending on the amount collected, we typically brought in a meal.  In the last few years when that wasn't done, I would get a box of candy or some other goodie for all the staff in the room and then give the lead teacher a small gift card as an extra gift since she did way more (and I really, really liked her).  If my DD #2 had stayed there this year rather than going to PreK, I would not have gotten the lead teacher anything extra as I really disliked her and her style with how she teaches.  I know it might not be the best way to go about it but I give based on how I feel they took care of my kids.

In my kids PreK class, the teachers ask for items for the classroom rather than personal gifts for them and many of the elementary teachers have asked for the same as did the before/after care program so we have gotten items off the wish lists.

And they often make a ton more money and at the center I went to, they refused to accept gifts or took the gift and shared it with the teachers and other stuff (we had an onsite cook).

That helps - in our case, the director is a bit more involved with DD becasue DD has food allergies, so we work with her quite closely - I'm not sure about a no gifts policy at our center?  Either way, I will probably do something small for her as well.

If you're close with the director, I would get a little something for them, as well. I communicated a lot with my son's preschool director last year and she was very appreciative when we presented her with a card and a gift card for the local coffee shop.
