Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Starting solids later, after 7 months?

Just wondering if anyone waited a little later to start solids? DD is 7 months and we've just started solids. So far she's eaten baby oatmeal, avocado, banana. I'm not sure how much she's actually eating though. When do they actually start eating being interested in eating rather than playing? ps I plan to continue breast feeding for at least a year am trying to do everything baby led

  • Well every baby is different. We went by her interest in food but waited until after 6 months. At first she would play or only take a few bites, now 3 weeks later she can devour 7 oz in a sitting. We've done avocado, peas, green beans, squash, and sweet patato. No fruits yet. And she seems to dislike oatmeal! Just keep at it and your LO will start eating it like a champ soon enough! We plan to BF until she shows signs of wanting to wean.

  • I think I remember someone telling us to start solids no later than 8 months, but there really is no rush to start sooner than 6.

DS started showing interest at 4 - 5 months, but since we were EBF and I was already doing an elimination diet to try to get his eczema under control, it didn't make sense for us to introduce solids until we had finished doing food trials in my diet.

We started at 6 months. So far we have given him peas, bananas, sweet potatoes, quinoa, avocado, pear, and apple. The apple gave him terrible gas. We haven't decided when to wean, I'm still learning all I can about it.

  • It took my LO about 3 weeks to learn how to swallow and actually eat the food rather than spit everything onto his bib, and about 4 weeks to get the hang of "open wide" for the spoon

  • I think you're fine.  We did BLW too, and we started giving her food to explore around 6 months, but it took until she was at least 8 months, maybe even 8.5 to really start to eat.  Before that she did eat a little, but I never spoon fed her or pushed her to eat more.  Then one day she just decided that she wanted to eat what I consider enough for a real meal.  FWIW, she was very interested in food starting around 4 months, but for us that didn't translate into actually consuming a lot of food until much later.
  • I didn't start until my son was 6 months and even now he is hit or miss on eating.  I guess Im not that hard core on it.  He still only eats one solid meal a day but daycare will probably start in the next month adding in one more.
