STM's come in please :)

We live in rural MN in a city of 600 people. That means that everything in town closes at 5pm. I know, exciting town right?? Anyways, the next closest town is about a half hour drive which does have a 24 hour drug store and grocery store and all the normal things. What I am wondering, is what are some basic medical needs or just things that I will want to make sure I have on hand when baby comes. I do not want to have to make a long trip in to town at 3am if I need something. Thankfully, the hospital I am delivering at is actually in our town. It is an extension of a much bigger hospital about an hour away and it's amazing! So I know that I can get emergency help quickly if I need it. But just curious as to what is good to have on hand. Thanks!

  • I would just make sure to have a trusty thermometer and a fever-reducing medicine on hand.  Also, some Benedryl in case of an allergic reaction or something.

Honestly, anything more severe than a fever or some itch would probably warrant an emergency trip to the doctor with an infant.

  • Saline nose spray (get the one that comes with the nose syringe in the package. It is soooo much better than the other nose syringes I've tried). Infant tylenol and motrin. Gas drops. Teething tablets, NOT baby orajel (it's dangerous).

  • Everything here closese at 6, and by everything I mean the whole country closes down and there is one on call pharmacy normally. We have saline spray and fever reducing liquid drug for DD. That's it, baby's don't need much and can't take much in the line of drugs.

You should come home from the hospital with most of what you need, make sure you also have a nasal aspirator too, I've heard that you get those in the hospital in the US (you don't here).

  • The only other thing I would add to what the other ladies said  is gripe water.

  • Like PP said, I would make sure you always have a working thermometer on hand-- I went through probably five or six the first year, but that's because I bought the super cheep digital ones you can find at Walmart for like $2.  I always made sure that I had both infant appropriate Tylenol and IBprofrin (sp?) as when LO had a fever, I was told to alternate between the two.  My DD and I also suffer from rediculously bad seasonal allergies, so I had allergy meds on hand too.  The trouble with allergy medication is that most of the OTC stuff isn't approved for infant use any more, so make sure to check with you pediatrician and get a dosing schedule.

Other than that I'd keep your standard array of bandaids and "Boo Boo Packs"-- my daughter has a Hello Kitty ice pack that she calls her Boo Boo Kitty.  Pinterest has a really great, really easy pattern to make some quick rice filled packs that you could use too.

    Good Luck!

I agree with these too! I forgot to mention the Formula.  I EBFed my DD#1, but I came down with poison ivy when she was 6 months old and was recommended not to BF while taking the steroids.  I was super glad to have that sample can on hand so I didn't have to shell out the $$$ for formula that wouldn't even get finished!

  • I was also thinking about things for YOU - lanolin, tucks pads, dermatop spray, and a nipple shield.  Most of these things you can get in the hospital, but might be good to have on hand if you're worried.
