I went in at 8 weeks and they did abdominal... they did say that if they couldn't see anything, they would try vaginal. They didn't tell me to drink before hand.

I had vaginal at 7 weeks and abdominal at 8 weeks. They could see baby abdominally at 8 weeks. You do not need to drink water before an ultrasound unless you are 20 weeks or higher, it is for the more detailed anatomy scan at 20 + weeks you need to drink the water my doctor told me.
Vag for me at 7w4d (8w2d according to LMP, but my doc was very open to considering both dates and went with my O date after the ultrasound)

We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
I just had my first u/s today at 8w2d. They were able to get a pretty good look abdominally, but then tried a vaginal one to get a better look at my ovaries.
Mine was at 7 weeks 4 days and I only had an abdominal. I had to have a full bladder before I went in - thankfully, she let me empty it after just a few pictures and we were able to do the rest with a nice empty bladder : )
I was wondering about this as well.. Mine will be at about 8wk 2 days and the sheet they gave me said to have a full bladder. I'm assuming that means abdominal u/s?
When I was pregnant with dd, they attempted an abdominal first. They were able to view the baby, but couldn't get a clear picture because of my retroverted uterus so I peed and they switched to transvaginal. I imagine if you are thin and have a normally placed uterus they might not have to do transvaginal.

At my appt they did both. They knew they weren't going to see baby with the abdominal, I'm not positive what they were looking for at that part, she said she was measuring something, I was too anxious to go pee to ask.
