Ferber/ CIO advice

We are using Ferber and it is working fantastic for us!  LO is sleeping in her crib, however, we have run into a situation and I need some advice.

LO wakes up now, every night, between 10 and 10:30pm.  She isn't hungry bc when we try to feed, she only takes 1-2 oz.  We have done the Ferber method of intervals at this time and it worked where she goes back to sleep within a half hour.

However, I am wondering if now it is an expectation that we are going to come in at this time and do the 1-2 min soothe, go back to bed routine.  We go in after 10 mins, soothe, leave.  Then go in after 15 mins, soothe, and leave.  After this soothe, she will usually CIO for about 10 more mins and go back to bed.  Has anyone had this happen where they think their LO now expects them to come in and soothe during intervals?

I'm wondering if I should just drop coming in at that time and see if she'll go back to bed.  Any ideas/ suggestions of what I should do?

Re: Ferber/ CIO advice

  • I didn't read the book we just did CIO and my DS seemed to get worse when we would check in but my suggestion would be to not go in anymore.  DS sometimes gets up in the middle of the night, although not always the same time and I let him whine a little until he falls asleep.  I really couldn't tell you how long it takes because I am half awake myself.  Unless he is screaming I don't go in.

  • That's the thing... she is screaming her little head off and standing in the crib facing the door.  I may have to just let her ride it out at this point.  I don't know...

I do agree that at this point, the checks are making it worse.

  • DS was doing this also. I gave him 10 to 15 minutes to CIO las night and he went back to sleep until this morning. He was definitely waiting to see if I was going to go in there.

  • Yeah, mine does this too. She wakes up same time every night. I think to see if it's a nap or the real deal. Since I'm always the one to do the final "night-night" I usually send Daddy in after 10 minutes of crying to tell her night-night and then let her go for 20. She never makes it 5 minutes after the first check unless something is actually wrong (cold, hot, sick, lonely, etc).  A few times it has been a very wet diaper, so we keep with the 10 minute check, but normally,  a total manipulation ploy.

  • Ok. Tonight we are going to let it ride. Thanks ladies!
