Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Signing

I was wondering if anyone has tried or does signing with their baby. It's something that I really want to do and I was shocked to hear that you should start at 6 months. So a few questions I have are, how old was your LO when you started introducing signing, what resources did you use to learn how to teach them and any helpful tips. TIA!

Re: Signing

  • We started at 6 weeks, because daycare did it, and I learned along with them. She's just now starting to do the signs, so I can see how the recommendation would be to start at 6 months. You don't really see results before that. I go to babysignlanguage.com. They have a lot there, and you can order flashcards and such to learn at home. I really just needed to keep up witht he daycare teachers, so I didn't order a kit. Nouns and verbs are the easiest ones, you sign diaper when you change them, sign dog when the dog comes near, eat when in the high chair, etc.

  • We just started recently. Mostly I just sign 'milk' to her before every feeding. I try to do 'mom' and 'dad' too, but I forget those often. You can really start anytime between now and toddlerhood! At this age it takes them a while to learn the signs/sign back, though - up to a few months.

  • I started signing a couple months ago. She hasn't started signing back, my understanding was they dont have the dexterity to do that until 9 months.  But she definitely watches the signs and seems to recognize them.  I haven't bothered with mom and dad, but we do milk, more, all done and love.  I downloaded a free Baby Sign app - there's a paid version that has 200 signs, haven't decided yet if it's worth it or if we'll just stick to the basics.

  • I have always done the sign for eat, he now realizes it and smiles when hungry.  I heard they really can't do them back till 8 months but it is good to start because they are still learning language at any age.  We are actually going to a class, he plays with other babies and incorporates sign into the play.  The other little boy is 10 months and he has started to do the sign for more.  We started a couple weeks ago and he has been there.  Anytime is good to start!

  • I started signing to DD between 5-6 months and she didn't start signing back until about 9 months. I have been signing to DS for about a month now and like PP he gets excited when I sign "milk" even if there is no bottle around.

  • I use the smart hands app and really like it. There is a free app with 30 signs but I paid the $5 for the one with 300 signs
  • started signing to baby around 2 months old.  she now signs milk and thinks that its hilarious and she will occasionally sign mom or dad.   We have been working on a lot of the signs, but especially "more" and 'done' and "eat" and "cereal" and "kitty" We watch a signing video from baby einstein.  Its free on youtube and she loves it!

  • We use the Baby Signing Time videos and I always try to sign when we're eating, playing with the dogs, etc. DD knows 'milk' 'eat' and 'more' but she can't really sign them yet. She kind of waves her hands around, but I think she doesn't have the coordination to do them yet. I think we started around 2 months

  • I did signing with my son around 6 months old. By 10 months he was signing back. And I will say that he was a very earlier talker, earlier than any of his friends. I really believe that signing helped his language skills. He is now three and every once in a while he will still use the sign language even though his saying the words physically. I now have a 8 month old daughter who started signing with from the very beginning since we already knew the signs. I do think she is understanding more and more of what we are saying. She knows cereal, milk, bath, i love you, more, eat, and all done. We used a combination of Baby Einstein signs dvd and also the baby signing time dvd's. I also bought a book with pictures with signs but I cannot remember the name of it.
  • Thanks so much for all the info and resources. I'm excited to start signing with dd

  • yep. did it and it was great. Started at 6 months. I didnt really do anything special just did the sign in normal conversation. phones have free apps for the basics or just google it. Nothing special needed. They only need the basics at first. Eat, hungry, more, please, thank you... Have fun with it!! :)
