February 2012 Moms

My Mom has done lost her mind...

Ok. My Mom hasn't been with a Man in over 25 years, since her and my Dad divorced when I was little. She has maybe been on a date, but her who haa has cobwebs in it.

She recently just joined facebook and is about to drive me crazy with it. So, she tells me last week that she has a boyfriend that she met on facebook, and he's in the military and he's coming here to see her in January. I look him up and she's his only friend, no information, textbook that it's a fake profile. So, I start messaging him asking him questions and he won't answer me which lights a fire under me. He finally starts answering me and he is so dumb, I can't. even. wrap my head around it. I'm asking him where he's stationed, his company, his regiment, field duty and he won't answer me. We've looked him up, traced his IP address, thrown evidence in my Mom's face and she is still talking to this guy. We've found out that he's a scam and that he baits women and tries to get money from them and she's still continuing to talk to him. We've done all we can tell my Mom and now she's getting mad at us. I could go on and on about everything and in the end she's just going to have to figure it out on her own and all I'll be able to say is, "I told you so." She's not the brightest crayon in the box and this has really made me question her sanity. We know her password so we check their conversations because I want to make sure this fruit loop isn't going to try and kill somebody, but now they are being gross and sexual and I kind of want to throw up in my mouth. I can't read it anymore! I don't know what to do...

  • OMG. Really mom?? That is not good. I hope the lightbulb goes on soon and she realizes what's going on.

  • Indifferent Bless your heart!

It sounds like you've done all that you can do for now. I'm sorry that you're dealing with such a sucky situation. Sad

  • Oh my goodness! Is there any way you can go to the police and just ask if anyone has reported being scammed, explain the situation, etc? Your mom might get pissed if she finds out but it could maybe scare this moron off or even get rid of him all together.

Girl, no. There's not even anybody listed active duty with his name and we've told her. The name on his uniform doesn't even match the name he's using.

  • That's scary and gross, but mostly scary. I hope she comes to her senses soon.
    Pass the sheet cake.

  • This is scary.  I would delete him and block him this way he can't find her.  Set the privacy settings on your mom's facebook so people can't look her up.  I'm sure she won't be able to navigate facebook and figure out that you did somethng and undo it.

This is sneaky and shady... and completely something I'd do if it were my Mom.

  • I've thought about doing that, but he has her email address too. Can you block people in their gmail too?

  • This is a fairly common scam and its really dangerous. He's coming to visit? So did she give him her address? IMO, the police need to be aware of the situation.

    Yeah, me too.

I was thinking the same thing! I have my mom's password and I too would delete and block! That sounds scary!

  • He 'says' he wants to move here. He asked her for a deposit for an apartment last night, but she never has money. I don't think whoever it is has any intentions of coming here, it's a scam for money.

That is not a red flag to her??? Holy crap. Have you seen the show Catfish on MTV? You should sign her up.

  • Right, I agree. But if she doesn't give him the money willingly...

  • That's insane!  And yes, you can block emails!

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I've told her everything I can and he knows we are onto him because he keeps telling her to lie to us and say she isn't talking to him. Me and my sisters have reported him to facebook and they aren't doing anything. Anybody else want on this train to report him? I'll send you the link to his profile :)

  • Are there authorities that you can contact? Could this be considered "exploiting the elderly"? I don't know how old your mom is, but clearly her brain isn't thinking straight!

  • What to do with his emails...go to an email he's sent her.  In gmail, that's what you said right?  There will be a drop down box that's "more" options.  Report it as spam or phishing and I'm pretty sure that it'll keep them from coming through anymore.  If he's smart though, he'll just create another email.

  • No way!  That is awful.  I would freaking murder someone who tried to take advantage of my mom.  I will totally report him for you, send me the link to his page.

I sent it to you! Thank you! Hopefully if enough people report him, they'll do something about it.

  • Okay I reported him.  Maybe if you sign her up for match.com and get her a date you could play the card... "Mom I know you like this guy but you can't even go on a date with him.  How about going on a date with this guy who lives here so you can form a relationship in person."

I told her for Christmas I would pay for her a membership to a real dating site. She's so dumb.

  • Holy cow!! I'm sorry. To me, above all else, I can't believe that she would believe that someone who is active duty military would get to just "pick" where he lives! Crazy stuff. I'd be glad to report him if you'll send me the link!!

Also, if you block him on her FB and gmail, yes, maybe he could just create new accounts. But maybe he'll think she finally wised up, and he'll move on? These people are usually in it for easy money. He's not gonna want to work too hard for it. There are plenty of other gullible folks out there. I think it's worth a shot!!

    Thanks :)

I know it might sound dumb, but I want to get through Christmas before I piss her off, hack into her fb, email and block him. She is a real drama queen and she'll go overboard and cancel Christmas with the family. This will be the first year in 7 years that my brother has been home for Christmas and I don't want to ruin it for him because he's been through so much (it's another long story). Does that sound stupid?

But I'm all for fb shutting down his account!

  • I'd contact your local police department and see if they have any materials on Internet scams. They're not going to be able to do much in terms of keeping this guy away from her but maybe if she sees literature about how this is a real issue that people fall victim to then she might reconsider.
