Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Supplementing - advice please (also posted on BF board)

DS is 5 months old and I went back to work last week.  My plan all along was to pump, but much to my disappointment, I found out that my milk has a very high lipase level and DS won't touch it.   Right now I feed him at 7 a.m. before I leave and at 5:30 right when I get back, and my parents drive him to my workplace so that I can feed him around noon, but I don't think that's enough.  The decision now becomes what to supplement with.  Here are the options I came up with:

(a)  Formula - any one has any recommendations on which ones it the best?  We tried giving DS Similac but he didn't seem to care for it (only took 1 ounce).

 (b) fruits/vegetables - we've already given DS avocado, banana and sweet potato, and he LOVES them.  So I could always increase the amount of those that I give him?  Previously I was trying not to give him too much until he is 6 months old.

(c) meat - like I said, I was planning to wait till 6 months, but perhaps I should start now?

(d) rice cereal / oatmeal?  I wasn't planning on doing this originally, but would this be a better option than formula?

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

  • I would add formula in the mix. A baby's diet should mainly be comprised of breastmilk or formula till a year old.

With formula make sure it's warm. Also if you can add fresh milk in with the formula that would be great. Is the lipase issue just when you freeze it or even when it sits in the fridge for the day?

  • Have you tried scalding your pum

  • Have you tried scalding your pumped BM? I had the same issue and scalding and making sure BM is warm helped us :

  • I can't scald it since there is no stove at my workplace.  I've tried using a bottle warmer but that doesn't get it warm enough.

All of this.  Have you tried Enfamil?  I have to supplement too because I just can't pump enough at work for DD's bottles.  I found that she prefers Enfamil over Similac.

  • Maybe your workplace might allow the use of a hot plate? It's worth asking.

  • I can't offer any suggestions on the lipase problem as I've never dealt with that.  However, if you need to supplement, I would definitely do formula over increasing solids, as BM/formula should be the primary source of nutrition.  I would try Enfamil or another brand, and try to combo BM and formula if you can to get him used to the taste.  Then you can slowly cut out the BM.

Good luck, I'm sorry you are faced with this.  I had a lot of issues nursing and I know how hard it is to be faced with this kind of decision, and not have things work out like you planned.

  • I started having supply issues right around 4 months, and we started solids a little early, to allow me to catch up. (Sinus infection) My supply now is gradually decreasing, and my pedi said that if DD is taking solids well and progressing, go ahead and give more solids to compensate. His point was that if she's progressing to solids, then why take a step backwards and introduce formula if she hasn't had any until now, then have to figure out what works for her, etc.

Point is, talk to your pedi. They will take things into account like weight, growth rate, development, food choices and make a recommendation based on your situation. IF I had great milk supply and was able to keep feeding her, we would be in the food for fun camp, but it didn't work out that way for us.

  • I thought the lipase issue only was only a problem when you used frozen milk?  Are you using fresh milk?  If you can't use fresh milk, then I would try scalding the milk.  If you can't do that, then use formula.  The other things that you mentioned will not be able to replace the nutrients/calories that BM and formula are meant to provide at 5 months of age.  Try another formula.  Trying once isn't enough.
  • The lipase issue arises as soon as I put the milk in the fridge/freezer.  DS is still getting 5 feedings a day from the breast; he typically gets 7 feedings a day.

Thanks for all the advice so far.  It's been a very frustrating few weeks.
