How to motivate a contented child?

DD's PT recommends we go back to doing tummy time (she's never crawled and is still immobile). She wants us to entice DD with a toy out of her reach to motivate her to move.

Problem with that - if DD can't get to something she'll happily play with her hands, feet or pop her thumb in her mouth and chill out.

I'm going to see if wrapping paper will motivate her. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: How to motivate a contented child?

  • My watch was the first thing that motivated DS to move. I let him have it for a few minutes and then moved it just barely out of the reach of his fingertips.

  • Oh boy, we had this problem for a while.  Everyone in DD's life was certain she could role from back to belly if she just had the motivation.  And, eventually, it was my phone - and the Baby Toy app - that got her to move.  My only suggestions is just to try as many things as possible.  Is there anything that she plays with that she seems to like a lot? Anything special? When you take a certain toy away, does she reach for it?  Basically, see if you can find out what that ONE special toy is, and use it!

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if part of my DD's issue was that she wasn't curious enough.  Just like your DD, she was content pretty much whever she was.  However, as she grew older, her curiostiy took over more and more.  I don't know how old your DD is, but it may also just be a matter of time - and encouraging your child's curiosity.

  • JoJo, I think our girls are close to the same age. DD was born 1/14/11.

She loves toys, the iPad,  and paper but if they're out of reach she's cool with just hanging out. I think we'll be doing a lot of iPad work while on our tummies.

  • Yep, just two weeks apart!

I tell you, your in a hard spot.  And, unfortunately, I don't have much advice.  But, I look forward to hearing how she does with the Ipad while on her tummy.  Keep us posted!

  • Age and other kids. Honestly, we struggled with this. DS did just not want to move. We were silly, we cheered, we pulled out all of the toys, we pulled out treats (chocolate chips, m&ms), we let him "earn" videos on the ipad. These things have gotten him moving and helped him build up to where he is motor wise but nothing but preschool has really gotten him independently motivated. We did find movement helped - the more he moved the more he'd move since he started to understand how it was beneficial, but getting him from limp noodle to crawling was tough for all of us.
  • I have no advice but I know I am going to have the same issue because A is super content/happy most of the time.  I think other children probably will be helpful.  That is one good thing about having twins I suppose.  A is finally starting to bounce in his jumperoo and I think it's because his is seeing O do it.

  • M didn't roll over until 14 months and didn't crawl until 21 months. Motivation was a real struggle for us.

Weirdly enough, paper got her crawling as well as my iPhone. She rolled for toys that lighted and made noises.

Food has also been a good motivator for M.

And I find that she will be more "active" if we start out any activity with some kind of vestibular stimulation like swinging or spinning. I learned that trick from an OT who would start every session with M with swinging.

  • The first time DS crawled he was trying to get my foot.  I had recently gotten a pedicure and had bright red toenails.  He really wanted to get them.  Best excuse for a pedicure ever.  Just try all sorts of things around the house too.  Ours loves cords and wires, keyboard.  Technology we play with.  The remote.  The dogs.  A beer bottle.  Mirrors.  Baby faces.
