Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Switching to formula

I need some guidance. My son is almost 9 mo old and has been EBF. I'm pregnant and combined with my supply tanking and a possible case of thrush, BFing has been really painful and difficult. I want to start the switch to formula soon.

The problem is that he wants nothing to do with it. We tried different bottles, formula, temperature of water. So when he refuses the bottle, I give in and BF him. This isn't sustainable of course. Do I keep offering the bottle and refuse to BF? I'm afraid he will hold out for hours. He's really stubborn. I mean, he wouldn't starve himself right in hopes of getting the breast? Anyone have any experience or advice? I'm at my wits end.

ETA: I also don't feed him the bottle - I get DH or my mom to try it.

Re: Switching to formula

  • I had to pump and mix BM with the formula for about 3 weeks. I started out with more BM then formula and gradually decreased the amount of BM I was adding.

I also went through 3 different formulas before I found one K liked. It ended up being Target's.

I would keep offering the bottle. Maybe try a different bottle?

  • I agree with PP suggestion- combo BM and formula in a bottle and try to wean him that way.  Will he take a BM bottle?  If he will, maybe try and give him pumped bottles of BM for a couple days instead of nursing to get him used to the bottle idea.  Then gradually add formula to the BM bottles.

Another thought- what about a sippy?  Maybe he will take formula through a sippy instead?

Well he used to take BM in a bottle but refuses it now. I think he started refusing bottles when we tried with formula. It's like he is taking a stand lol. I did try mostly BM and some formula but he wouldn't even take a sip.

He hates sippy cups too. I've offered formula and water to just get him used to it. He will throw it around and then it ultimately falls in the floor. He won't take a sip. This kid won't take anything but from the tap now. I have no idea where to go from here.

  • It might honestly be a case of he might just have to wait him out. He's 9mths old so he knows how to get his way. He won't starve himself, but that is totally your decision. I just don't feel the need to be in pain to breast feed my child.

    Good luck!

  • Eeek, that's tough.  I guess if it was me I would decide what feedings I would only give him a bottle (I would probably do just BM to start) and only offer the bottle- no nursing.  I think you're right; he's not going to starve himself.  Maybe do bottles during the day and only nurse in the morning and before bed until you have him taking a least a bit from a bottle.  Then cut out those last 2 nursing sessions and gradually add formula to the BM.

     Good luck!
