Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Seven months, no babbling?

LO turned seven months last week, and has yet to start babbling.  He makes quite a few noises (grunts, squeals, coos, shrieks, etc.), but he hasn't started the "lalalala," "bababa," stuff yet.  When did this happen for your LO?

  • About 4 months but I talk to my son all the time since birth.

  • I spoke to my son all the time too and he started babbling around Thanksgiving.  One day he just started and it hasn't stopped.  I would give him a couple more weeks and I am sure he will.

  • I talk to my daughter constantly, describe things, sing to her, etc everything you are supposed to do to help their vocabulary and speech. She will be 8 months in a few days and I would say in the last 2 weeks she has started babbling. She goes non-stop now and has even said "mama" a few times! :) I was getting a little concerned because she has hit all other milestones either early or right on time.

So the answer to your question is 7.5 months.

I do the same things you're doing with your LO, which is partly why I'm a bit anxious about him not babbling yet.  Hopefully he'll start babbling soon!  7.5 months is just around the corner for us now!  :O)

  • Around 7 months I think (it's terrible that I don't keep track). He started the noises around 6.5 I'd say and dada around 7ish.  Still no mama but a lot of noises.

  • Try not to stress, I talk to my DD constantly and she didn't really start babbling until about 8 months.  Before that I would occasionally hear consonant sounds amidst long strings of vowels, but no true babbling (dadada, bababa, etc).  Then one day she started in with the "dadada" and hasn't looked back.

Also, yes, talking and interacting with your child makes a huge difference, but just because one baby babbles at 6 months and one babbles at 9 doesn't mean that the 6 month's old mom's talked to them more.  Babies hit milestones within a range of normal, and often a child will consistently hit a certain kind of milestone (gross motor, fine motor, speech, etc) earlier and hit a different set a bit later.  It's a combo of nature and nurture, not one or the other.

  • Mine started a couple weeks ago.   It just started one day and its pretty constant now.

  • I am working on my masters in speech pathology and our rule of thumb is no babbling by 10 months is a red flag. If your LO is making other noises and has different sounds that mean different things (like a squeal when happy, grunt when frustrated, etc) I wouldn't worry yet. It will probably come soon. I did everything possible with DD - talking constantly, reading, emphasizing early developing sounds, and she just started babbling a little over a week ago. Babies will do it when they're ready! PP was right, it doesn't mean you didn't do something you should have, or that an early babbling baby had better input. According to my baby book, I didn't babble till 8 months and had a handful if real words by 10. It doesn't mean your LO is behind at all!

  • DS really JUST started doing this. He "talks" a LOT and does use consonants and vowels together but never really did the whole babababa dadadada mamamama thing. I was really worried and did a ton of internet research and found that the general consensus is it's only an issue if they aren't doing it by nine months. I was still a little worried and planned to bring it up with his pedi next time we see her and lo and behold, all day today it has been "dadadada". I'm still going to bring it up but I really don't think it's that big of a deal because he does use those sounds all the time even if he isn't repeating them.

  • I have Googled this obsessively because at 7.5 months corrected, my baby boy still doesn't string together long repetitive babbles (babababa etc.)... but he does babble with a variety of sounds (vowels and consonants... e.g., he'll look up at me and sweetly tell me "da," as though it's very important that he tell me that!). I've decided not to worry for at least another month. (He has said "mama" three times, though, when upset/crying.)

BTW, I've talked to my baby CONSTANTLY since birth as well (and we read several books to him daily), so I don't think doing that is what makes a baby start repetitive babbling earlier. Then again, my LO has been focused on pulling up, starting to cruise, and trying to walk, so my theory is he's more focused on that for now and will turn his attention more to speech once he's ready.

Yup, all of this, especially the bolded.  FWIW, my undergrad is in speech. path, master's in sp. ed. Smile

  • My almost 9 month old DD is still not babbling very much.  I am worried about it and will be bringing it up to our pedi at her 9 month visit.  She oohs and aahs a lot and every once in awhile she will through in a "gaga" or "nah nah".  Yesterday she was saying "titi" over and over again.  She has never ever said "ba" or "dada" or mama.  I also talk A LOT to her and I sing constantly (I am a music teacher).

She sits up by herself, crawls, pulls up to a stand, claps, and laughs.  I am hoping she will start babbling soon.
