carriers vs slings

When do you use a carrier and when do you use a sling? Is it just personal preference?

Re: carriers vs slings

  • Depends on brand and then personal preference. I didn't like most of the slings I looked at. So, I ordered a Beco Butterfly 2. It comes with an infant insert and carries in multiple positions, goes from 7-40lbs. But the big selling point for me was being able to pass baby off to daddy or whoever without removing baby from the carrier!!!

  • Definitely personal preference. I use my sling more than my carrier I think. I use my sling in the grocery store, while I'm teaching, while walking, while I'm out and its cold or windy. I also have one I use in the shower. I only use my Ergo carrier around the house right now while I'm doing chores and LO doesn't want to be put down. My reasoning is that I have trouble getting the Ergo on by myself. I'd imagine that when LO is bigger and can hold my neck while I snap the Ergo in the back that I'll use it more, but for now the sling is the easier option because its simple and one handed (and more comfortable IMO).

(FWIW, The slings I have are all TaylorMade slings. I have a French Twill and a Shower/Pool Mesh Sling. Maya Slings are awesome to. DO NOT buy a sevenslings! They're total crap and a scam!)

  • I agree, it's personal preference. For me, getting multiple slings/carriers was not an option and so I wanted just one item that would last long. So getting this carrier which works from 7 to 35 lbs and has a newborn option without buying an insert!

Boba is an amazing brand. Everyone I know that has one speaks very highly of them.

OP Boba also has different types of carries, they have the structured ones with clips (like ergo) and they have a moby-style wrap, and they have a maya wrap which is like a cross between the two.

  • I'm getting an Ergo and Boba since all my mom friends have recommended them. It definitely is personal preference! I had trouble setting up the Moby so we're going to steer clear of it this time.
