mothers of 3 yo boys - picture ?

Have  you taken your 3 yo for pictures this holiday season?  I have taken mine 3 times!!  All 3 times he was too active and the photographer was too slow.  I'm at my whits end and not sure if I should just let it go and try again after the holidays are over and these places slow down.

Tonight the sales girl said, "there's a reason our walls aren't covered with pictures of 3 year old boys. . . they're tough.  You're not alone."

  • We have a friend who is a photography he brings his equipment and we go outside and just play. We let DS run and jump and goof around and he snaps picks. Then we do some sitting down on a bench or in a cool location. It works out great. I don't think a studio shoot would work.

  • Last year we did a mini session with a local photographer (30 minutes long) and she actually got some good pictures of DS.  It was just long enough to keep his attention, and DH and I were able to join in for a couple of family pictures.  I've found he's much better when we use toys to keep him entertained, and I've had to accept that they will be in the picture.  They tell part of the story of what he's into.  When he was 2 1/2 I have pictures of him with monkeys over his shoulder ready to throw them at the photographer.  It was one of our favorite photos because his smile was genuine and he was enoying himself.  His pictures right before his 4th birthday have various super hero figures sitting next to him, which really speaks to the phase he is in now.  Here is a photo from a session he was really fighting.  He was trying so hard not to smile, so this picture cracks me up :) image
  • I would check out mini sessions with a photog.  Then he can do his thing and the photog and get candid shots.  My siggy is one of my favorites where they are just being goof balls.  I have some good shots too, but the boys being themselves are always my favorites.  We had one session where DS1 gave himself a black eye 2 hours before our appt.  My amazing photog touched up some of them.  I have the one without the touching up framed.  That is DS to a T.

  • Hee hee, I totally feel your pain. We have had kids christmas pictures for the last 6 yrs... this year we actually got 2 pictures that all three boys looked at the camera at the same time! For the most part they were smiling. The youngest is 3. Last year, he wanted no part of the photography session!

  • Wow, we must have an angel :)

SS loves to get his picture taken. We've gone to Sears twice now since little brother was born, and he's done great. He also has gotten pictures at daycare three times now. I think we just get photographers that are good at being silly with him.

Plus we mentally prepare him for things (well, like everything). I'll tell him the day before that we'll get pictures tomorrow... then on the car ride there, we'll talk about smiling good and listening to the lady who's going to take pictures.

He thinks its totally fun to smile for a picture, then see it on the camera. So that totally helps!

I agree with some of the PP... avoid the studio, and get outside. Let him run, jump, and be him. Professional photographers are awesome at catching those natural moments, and those are the ones you'll cherish most anyways. All sitting nicely in a row doesn't capture our children's personalities.

  • We had outdoor family portraits taken a couple months ago and DS was actually pretty good.  DS is good about sitting still for pictures, he is just very easily distracted and likes to look everywhere but at the camera.

  • I knew it would be hard with my 2 and 3 year old and my 3 month old with a prof photographer. So i got them dressed up and took my own pics of they in front of Christmas tree in living room. It took 2 different days to get the right pics and lots of mms but Christmas cards are done!
