Pre-School and Daycare

Constantly sick - any advice?

Hi everyone -

I don't quite know what to do, so I thought I'd post here. DS has been at daycare for about 1.5 years now and at first he used to be sick a lot. Now, it's a lot better overall. However, it's now about the 4th time where we're repeating the same pattern of sickness:

- he gets a stuffy nose and has that for a while (not surprised, it seems all kids who who to daycare/preschool have that

- he gets a low grade fever that lasts 3-4 days

- then we go to the doctor's and find a bit of an inflamated ear or two... doc prescribes antibiotics

I try to avoid antibiotics - I'm a strong believer that US doctors over-prescribe those - so I try all sorts of home remedies, none of which work fast enough (we can't pay a nanny AND pre-school or skip work all the time), and so we revert to antibiotics. I'm concerned about DS's amune system and our doctor is just not giving me any other ideas. We're switching doctors, but still... I don't know what' sup with DS.

Do your LOs get sick this often? Do you end up giving them antibiotics every time? What other remedies do you use?

 Thanks!!

Re: Constantly sick - any advice?

  • EI are extremely common in kids b/c of the length of their Eustachian tubes and fluid build-up.  As they grow, so will their ears. If your LO continues to get EI's I wouldn't be surprised if your pedi suggests tubes.  Ear tubes are nothing to fear, 5 minute procedure and they are wonderful!  I never had to worry about DD getting EI's for a yr and flying on a plane (we do often) was no prob.

  • Since you seem to be looking for more natural remedies/prevention, have you tried taking him to a chiropractor? I have heard that regular adjustments can really help, especially with things like frequent ear infections. Of course, look for one that regularly deals with children.

  • I could have written this post.  We are currently trying to "let it run its course" for the same reason - I am not a fan of giving DS antibiotics. . . especially since he's already had a very serious reaction to amoxicillin.  The cough is getting heavy and has been around for a couple weeks.  I think I'm looking at another trip to the pedi tomorrow.  :(
