Thoughts on the Kate Middleton Nurse Suicide?

Most of us have heard that one of the nurses who tended to Kate Middleton took her own life after being part of a radio show prank. The media is mostly reporting that she was Kate's nurse but from what I understand, she only transferred the call to Kate's actual nurse.

I am really confused as to how this woman's (tragic) death is being blamed on the DJs. By all accounts, she was never even under disciplinary action for transferring the call or giving out medical info (which she likely would be if she worked here in the states; I'm sure they have some version of HIPAA across the pond.)

I feel like DJs pull pranks all the time, and while it WAS idiotic, I am sure even they never expected to actually get through. (I bet princess Kate has a cell phone, just sayin'.)

Anyway, I guess I feel like suicide is a terrible thing, but that there must've been some emotional and/or mental instability present prior to the prank. People don't just end their lives over a radio prank that didn't even take place in their own country, right? I feel like those DJs are just a couple of Tools but that they're not responsible for this woman's death. What do you think?

Re: Thoughts on the Kate Middleton Nurse Suicide?

  • I tend to shove these stories to the side when I hear them because I'm too empathetic and I start feeling bad.  But, from what I do know, I don't think the DJs are fully to blame, but I think it's their brand of behavior that pushes and pokes and prods people like that nurse into taking their lives or doing other harmful things to themselves.

You just never know where a person is in their life, and while "possible suicide" probably didn't even cross those DJs' minds I think it was still poorly done on their parts.  Mature adults just don't behave that way - it's completely idiotic, and I do think it played a part in her decision to end her life.

ETA: We should also consider the absolutely immense amount of media attention that is focused on Kate and anything to do with Kate right now.  Even if that woman didn't come under fire from her job, suddenly she was the butt of a HUGE joke and was under the scrutiny of pretty much every eye that's been turned on Kate in recent days.  That is some heavy stuff.  Heck, if that sort of pressure were suddenly on me I know I'd be a touch uncomfortable.  Imagine how she must have felt, considering how likely it is that she already had underlying issues and was probably already contemplating suicide.

The two of you just summed up my thoughts.

Also, they played a clip of the prank over the radio here yesterday, and I don't get it. Unless the clip was edited to be shorter, the call went something like "Hi, this is the Queen, can I talk to Kate?" "Sure." I don't know but I feel the staff should have known or even been told to expect prank calls and be more wary of them. I feel like the pranksters got to where they wanted way too easily.
