POLL: Naming your next child

When you conceive your next child, do you plan to:

a.) Have the first letter of the name match DC #1 (ie: Carl and Cindy)?
b.) Have the ending of the name match DC #1 (ie: Jason and Mason)?
c.) Have the exact same syllables as DC #1 (ie: [2] Amy and Laurie)?
d.) Have the names complete opposites from one another.

MY ANSWER- D
We do want a name at the end of the Alphabet though. Something that starts with either R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, or Z.

Re: POLL: Naming your next child

  • None of the above. People actually do that?

We pick names we like. I don't care about syllables or letters, or matching. People do?

Agreed.... but it might be a little more unique then Rylee...

    Rylee - 3.28.08
    Malakai - 8.3.09
    Ezra - 12.1.11 ASD

Oh yeah..all the time. I have 5 friends that are all pg right now, and out of those 5, 3 of them are going to choose one of the above options to be "matchy". That's why I did this poll.

  • That's crazy.

We have a Josephine, if its a girl next time she'll be Matilda.

    A boy? Dean or Kyle.

  • That is a little much. ?if we have a boy, it will be Ben. ?If we have a girl, probably Mallory or Cameron.

  • I don't know anyone who wants to be matchy, and if my friends did I think i would question why. We will choose a name we like, unless it completely clashes with our last name.

    I agree with you completely!

  • Yes, people actually do that kind of stuff...like my parents!  My p's are Jack & Kim and if they had boys they'd have J names and girls would have K names.  So we have Jack, Kim, Jack, Karla, Katie.  I don't think it's too kooky; at least not as weird as having rhyming names like a friend of mine - Jacqueline and her twin sister Irene.

  • I'm in no way going to do anything too matchy...besides, if I have a girl, there aren't a lot of Q names to pick from.

It is interesting the lengths some people will go with kids' names. One of DH's cousins has 4 kids.  The first two have names that start with a vowel, are 2 syllables, and end in -an, it just kind of happened that way.  The 3rd's name started with a consonant, was 2 syllables, had a consonant in the middle, and ended in -er.  So when the 4th came along several years later, they would only consider names that matched the parameters of #3's name.  It took a while for them to come up with a name.

  • I have said I like a couple of names and then realized they rhyme with ds's name, probably why I like them :) I would never do that!

  • My H and I both are partial to Carrington if we have another little girl.  It has nothing to do with Emerson-just happens that they both have the same ending.

  • I guess weird naming rituals runs in my family...my mom is 1 of 6 and each of them have a name that allows a 3-letter nickname (Valerie, Kimberley, etc.).  My grandma had her last baby and wanted to name her Jill but it didn't fit with her whole theme so she named my aunt Jil.  I don't think anyone ever spells her name correctly.

  • e) none of the above. I've never even thought about naming them the same, or purposely naming them opposites. We just use names we like.

  • um, yeah - not doing any of that- I do confess that I wanted our 2nd dog's name to "go" w/ our first dog's name.  Daisy is our first dog and our 2nd dog, Dixon went through 3 names (in like 2 wks) before we finally settled on Dixon.

  • Dh and siblings are all B names.  I also had neighbors growing up and the parents were Jack and Judy and the kids were Jeanie, Joy, Jill and Jonny  We are just picking names that we like :-)

  • I won't go out of my way to be matchy, but if we happen to pick a name that somehow goes along with "Ian", then that will be it. I also liked Evan and dh liked Kieran, so if we had another boy, who knows. If it's a girl, it will most likely be Chloe, so no chance in being matchy there.
  • we want names that sorta go together in that they are classic but nothing like matching.  and def not like my SILs kids - michael and michelle.
  • DH has a long last name so the first name can't have more than 2 syllables.?

Right now for a girl I like Nina. For a boy- I have no idea.?

  • If we have a daughter next time, she will be Esther...not because it goes with Edith, but because I have always loved that name.  If it's a boy, we're not sure, but I doubt it would be an "E" name.

  • we plan on picking names that we like . ?the middle name we try to use a family name, but the first name we go for completely unique from the rest of the family . . .?
  • We like Ryne Joseph for a boy and Isabella Kate for a girl. We don't have any particular reason why... we just like them.

However, we have friends that have 2 boys named: Colton and Cooper. They plan on having 2 more children, so if they are boys, they will have Co names w/ 6 letters. If they have a girl.... Lillian.

  • Ryne? Can I talk you out of that?

    I like Isabella kate.

  • Apologies to anyone who actually does any of the above, but I think it's ridiculous. A friend from high school named all her kids with Ts. The youngest is Trevor, which she doesn't really like, but it was the only T name they could come close to agreeing on. I said "Why not an M, or a B, or a J?"

"But the others are all Ts."

It's not a law. Pick another letter. I'd rather have my kid go through life with a name I liked than "matching." (She never planed on four, so she didn't have enough T names to go around.)

A boy would be discussed, but we would neither seek out nor avoid Js, or rhymes or two syllable names. His name would be the name that sounded best for him and said something about him to us. A girl? Marianna. Different letter, different end sound, different syllables. Picked because it's pretty, and it's Matt's late mother's name.

  • DHs first 2 kids are one syllable BR names.  Now DD is a 3 syllable E name.  They don't necessarily sound right together and I don't necessarily care.  Next child will be a name that sounds right with DDs name.  I don't do 1 syllable names but other than that, no idea.

  • DH has cousins who are all "C" names. I can never keep any of them straight. Courtney, Cassidy and Conner. I don't know who's a boy and who's a girl. Ugh.

If we have a boy he is going to be August. A girl name is up in the air. Right now I like Maddeline or Jillian, but we'll see ...

  • Reminds me of the Duggar family.  Imagine coming up with a J name for 17 kids.  We named our dd after a vineyard we had our wedding reception at, so we will try to be at sentimental with the next...but nothing that rhymes, etc.
  • Well, our next child will be called "never gonna happen" as I had a tubal after DD#2, but I'll throw in my .02 anyway Smile

I like names that aren't too common, but I'm more like that with the middle names.  DD#1's middle name is Andrea and I haven't seen that as a middle name before.  With DS and DD#2 we tried to pick names where they wouldn't be known as the 8th kid in their class with that name.  Don't think we succeeded though...DH loved "Cole" for DS and started calling DD#2 "Lexi" before she was born and we were even sure she was a girl!

  • We joke that we will pick a name that starts with a D b/c my name starts with an A, DH is B, and DD is C. But that is a joke.

We will pick a name we like and agree on. My youngest sister got her name in part b/c my mom didn't want another child with a name ending in a 'y'. The 3 older girls are Avery, Aynsley, and Lindsay. My baby sister is Marlaina.?

  • Right after we decided on DD's name, I decided that Juliet (which was also on our list) would go really well with Madeleine, if we ever had another girl.  I think having the "l" in the middle gives them a nice link phonetically but isn't too matchy.
  • I guess we are a "go together"..  DS has a very Italian name (both first and middle) so we plan to pick another Italian name for DD...  Our last name ends in O so we are a little limited in name choices if we don't want our kids name to sound like Marco Polo...
  • well if our next baby is a boy we are going to name him Liam because we love that name for a boy. If we have another girl I have no idea.
  • I guess I would say D only because that is what we have but we didn't think about it.  We choose names based on what we liked.
  • We won't have "matchy" names.  My cousins are Michael and Michelle.  I do like some N names for another son, but it's not because I'm trying to match.

I taught a kid named Marco Polo a few years ago! (Those were his first and middle name, not his first and last.)?
