Is Driving alone ok at 39 weeks??

Has anyone's doctor advised them to stop driving at a certain time during their pregnancy?  I'm due on the 18th and my mom is flying in tomorrow and my husband has to work.  The airport is an hour away.  As of Friday I was not dilated and I have no signs of pre-labor.  I believe its safe for me to drive alone to pick her up.  But just curious if doctors advise mothers to be to stop driving as their due date gets closer.

  • I would do it. If you're not having contractions prior to the drive, the odds of suddenly having unbearable ones less than an hour later seem low. If you defy the odds and things get hairy, you can always pull over and call for help.

  • I would go ahead and pick your mom up from the airport. I'm still driving, and no my doctor hasn't said anything about it. i don't tend to sign myself up for long rides alone, but as long as you are feeling ok beforehand, i agree the odds are low you'll suddenly have a problem.
  • I drive all over the place for work.  I have a "plan B" in place whenever I'm going an hour away, to have a co-worker get me if necessary.  But I agree with other posters; the likelihood of going into labor so intense you can't drive in just an hour is pretty slim.

  • I would definitely drive. I'm due Saturday and still drive myself to work. It can take 40 minutes to get home some days. Also, I am a cheer coach and my doc said it was fine to drive to 'away games,' the most recent one was 70 mins away. At my last appt I wasn't dilated but I am abt 80 effaced. Hth.

  • I gave birth at 39w5d with DS, and worked up until two days before (was actually supposed to go in the day I delivered, too).

I wouldn't drive hours away, just because I would want to be relatively close to my hospital, but one hour each way is NBD.

  • Thank you ladies.  I kinda figured it would be safe to drive just wanted to get some other opinions.
  • I just drove home from work with some crazy BH contractions going on.  Not fun, but it was fine.  I wasn't about to wreck the car or anything.  You should be fine, especially if you aren't feeling anything beforehand.
  • I've never been told not to drive late in pregnancy - if you aren't on bed rest or some other restrictions you should be fine!

My Dr's only restrictions had to do with travel distance, and no air travel in the last 2 months.

  • according to pregnancy books I've read it ok to drive as long as you feel you can comfortably drive, as long as labor hasn't started.

  • I drove up until the day I delivered.

    I'd go pick her up.
