3rd Trimester

Will you start working a modified schedule?

My work offered to let me change my hours when I get closer to delivery. I know that I am going to be super tired and struggling to keep up with my work life and home life. I am not sure if I really want to or not. I love my job, but I can tell I'm getting worn out as the days go by. I still have 7 weeks until the due date. I'm curious if anyone else will be planning to work less then the regular 40 hour full time position? If so, when will you start and what will you be working?

Re: Will you start working a modified schedule?

  • I didn't. I had to be full time to keep my benefits, and I wanted every bit of time at home with LO after he was born. Plus, I would have been bored sitting around at home.

  • I didn't with DD #1. I worked 4pm-12am up until 2 days before I delivered (I worked on Friday and went into labor on Sunday). I now work part time on the weekends, but plan on working until the very end, hopefully.

  • I truly don't mean this in a snarky way but when (if) you get pregnant with a second and have to chase a toddler, you're going to hope to stay at work all.the.time lol  Work (unless you have a crazy physical job) is nothing compared to trying to be pregnant with ZERO down time when your other kid is around/awake.  I tip my hat to SAHMs because they must be ready to fall over from the exhaustion.

  • I'm glad I worked full time up until I went into labor. In the last weeks, I was bored stiff on my days off just impatiently waiting for baby to come... I think being active (I walk a lot at work) also helped make my delivery easier. I was able to save all of my time off and stay home with my LO for 10 weeks before returning to work.

  • I worked up to 38 weeks (last Fri) only because I have PTO I must burn before the end of the year or I lose it all so it was just good timing. If I hadn't had it I would still be working up until he is born.

I have a 3 year old daughter - but she is really amazing and very easy going. I'm crazy lucky to have such a great kid.. Staying home would be pretty restful for me, even with her,  and I wouldn't lose any PTO if I worked a mod. schedual. I just love my job and would miss it. Smile
  • I am done working next week at 36 weeks. I work 60 hours a week and need time to get things together at our house.

  • I'm still working a normal 40-50 hour work week and will be until he gets here. If you have a chance to work a different schedule, I'd take it. Even though I have a desk job, I'm really exhausted these days.

  • I'm not going to adjust my hours but I am going to work from home after New Years, since I am due in early January. Not having to commute and working from home in comfy clothes will make a big difference, I think.
  • My job is flexible, so I've been "self-modifying" as I go along. My boss doesn't worry about my hours as long as my work gets done, so I've been arriving at 9 and leaving at 4.  No one even knows!

  • Ironically, my schedule this year is such that from 36 weeks till birth, I've gone from working 50-60 hours/week to >70 hours. Although I have times when I'm cranky about it, I'll admit it's a good distraction. I'd probably be equally happy with 40 hours, though :-).

And since you're an ER doc (if I remember correctly?), you're on your feet all the time.  I have no idea how you do it.  You're freaking superwoman!!

  • Nope. I'm working until the 21st, full time. Then the office is closed the 24th & 25th. The 26th I have pre-admin stuff at the hospital that is going to eat up my day. My c/s is scheduled for the 28th but the doctor is working on having it moved to the 27th - so, I'm working up until I have my baby full time. It sucks, but it's okay.

If they OFFERED I might, but they won't and I'm not losing FMLA time to being out of the office.

  • My due date is March 1st, my last day at  the office will be Feb 15th. I work in a veterinary office and I become a liability after a certain point. Up until then I will continue to work 50 hrs a wk.

Aww, thanks! Luckily for me, I'm covering Lifeflight this month, so although my hours are longer, there is some downtime. Thank goodness--you know it's bad when you can hardly wedge your feet into crocs.

    Happy due date!

  • I'm due 1/2/13. My temp officially takes over for me on the 17th. I will work the 17th through the 21st on a very easy schedule - in by 9, out by 4, making sure the temp has all questions answered and tying up loose ends. I'll be out for Christmas the 24th through 26th and finally done with work on the 28th.

My walking ability has just gotten harder and I'm looking forward to some rest prior to baby.

  • I'll be working 40 hours a week until Jan 7, which is a week before my due date. I have a pretty physical job (not as much as a doctor, though!), and I'm already hurting at the end of the day. Even if I have a week or so of time off before he's born, I'm fine with that. I'll have a lot of stuff to finish up around the house. Plus, I get 16 weeks off, so I don't feel so bad about it.

  • I'm hoping to be able to work til I pop. After delivery, I'll start doing a partial telecommute, though, so I can continue recovering and BFing and all that fun stuff.

  • I am planning on working all the way up until I deliver. Luckily, I work in education so we get off December 22nd-January 1st off. So it is a nice break that I am looking forward to having. If this little man still hasn't arrived, I will be back to work on January 2nd full-time till he does. Though I know that if I really was in distress with my commute (I have over an hour each way) that I probably could ask if I could work a few days from home. But I don't plan on asking unless I am really having issues, like bad BH contractions where I don't feel safe enough to get behind the wheel. I just would prefer to save all of my time to spend with baby when he does finally get here.

  • I'm planning to work right up until he's born so I don't use up my leave that I want to use later with him. I've been sick for the past week and a half so I've kind of modified my own schedule by working from home an hour or two a day so my office time is shorter and I skip traffic. My boss hasn't complained so I  may keep this up until baby arrives just for my own sanity (the traffic around here is the worst!)

Luckily, I have a desk job so it's not physically strenuous but I'm still exhausted at the end of the day.  I'm hoping that after LO arrives I'll be able to work from home at least part of the time so I can spend more time with him before coming back into the office full time.  Hopefully the boss will be ok with that.

  • It would depend on how it would affect my leave/benefits/vacation time.  If I was still going to get to take my full leave after the baby got here, then I would be more apt to consider it, but probably only for the last 2-3 weeks.  I only just got to the point this week where I just want to stay home and rest.

I worked until the end with DS, and am pretty much doing the same thing this time(I have to take a few days of vacation before my RCS because of the holiday, but it worked out best that way for our work scheduling).  My last day is 12/22, my RCS is 12/27.

  • I'm still working the same number of hours, just spreading them around a little differently starting 12/1 & taking a little more time away from the public desk when I need it.  I don't think I would've requested a change as we've had recent changes in the two levels of management immediately above me & I don't want to be "that person," but my direct supervisor urged me to make modifications.  She was right-- I've noticed a difference in the intensity of the sciatica that's made its presence known!

  • I've already started. hehe... I'm just to uncomfortable and tired all the time to keep working so much. So now, instead of working 9-4 i work from 9-1 and its amazing. I love working only 4 hours a day. I get to come into to work, go home at 1 for lunch and stay home to do whatever i want. Usually, its laying down untill my back stops killing me, then get up and do whatever i need around the house.

After i have the baby, im working 3 hours a day ( but i so wish i can afford to just stay home).

  • I worked up until the day I had DD, and had no reason not to.  With this one I'll be working through the Friday prior to my RCS (scheduled for a Wednesday) mainly just so I can have a couple days to take care of last minute appointments and hopefully spend some time with DD.  With the nature of my job, I dont have the option to telecommute or work an adjusted schedule.
