Parenting after a Loss

Q from a PgAL lurker

Hi Ladies!

With any luck I will be joining you here next month!I'm always over here creepin' on your adorbs baby pictures and how things are going for you all.

A question for those whose LOs sleep in a PNP at night:  do you put them in the bassinet (I guess that's the mattress part?  who knows) or the "newborn napper station" up on top?  Also, when using stuff like a RNP or swing (or even the newborn napper on the PNP), how do you strap them in if they're swaddled or in a sleep sack?  I know I'm probably overthinking all this, but it still seems so foreign to me.  Thanks for any and all insight!

Re: Q from a PgAL lurker

  • I strapped DS into the RnP while swaddled.  I didn't swaddle his legs.  I just tucked the tail of the blanket up between his legs and then strapped him in.  We used A&A blankets for swaddling.  On cold nights, I also put a blanket just over his legs in the RnP.  Strapping him in was key for me since he began rolling over to his side from birth on.

ETA:  I did the same thing for napping in the swing.

  • DD slept swaddled in the NB napper thing that snaps onto the top of the PnP. Around 2 months she got too long for it so we took the napper off and moved her to the regular PnP on the high level, still swaddled. From there we gradually transitioned to a sleep sack and then to her crib in her own room.

Some of the swaddelers (like the swaddle mes) have a hole in the back of them. In theory, you can thread the straps through, hook baby in, and then wrap the swaddle around them. I tried to swaddle DD in her swing one time and all she did was scream. I didn't try it again after that! Lol

So, you're basically my favorite person right now...someone gave us one of the Swaddle Me's, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what the hole was for.  I was all pissy like, "I can't believe someone would give us this swaddler with a hole in it, ugh!"  lol.

  • First, I can't wait for you to join PAL. : I can't wait to see pics of baby rockette

Jackson doesn't like the extra nice bassinet we got as a gift. He would scream when he went in it. So now it's in an extra room never used. He loves his PNP. I swaddle him at night and also roll a blanket so he can't roll over. All he does is move his head from side to side so I make sure there is space by his head so he can turn his head either direction with out his face being in the blanket. Once he gets better I'm not quite sure.

  • We used the napper until he got too tall for it. Try without first, D liked the coziness of the napper at first, but starting with the bassinet might make a crib transition easier. After the napper we switched to the bassinet part until it was crib time.

  • Oh and regarding strapping in, I always strapped him in and covered over him. He wasn't a swaddle fan. Some swaddles have strap holes, those might work in a swing or the like.

  • In the PNP she slept in the bassinet part. In the swing, we never strapped her in. It had a pretty good recline, and she didn't move when she slept.

  • YAY I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOUR IMMINENT ARRIVAL. And LO's, of course.

DD slept in her PnP in our room until about two weeks ago, and we always just put her in the flat bassinet mattress part. She transitioned to her crib really well, too, I think maybe because she was used to sleeping flat on her back? But we didn't have any reflux issues or anything to deal with, so.

  • We used the RNP and didn't strap her in since she was swaddled.  She was young enough where she wasn't going anywhere.  She napped in the swing until 5m and we didn't strap her in until she was able to roll and squirm--so not until maybe 3m?  We didn't swaddle her in the swing though usually.

  • DD has slept swaddled in the upper setting of the PNP since day one. She also likes her crib during the day, which I attribute to never using a RNP. Her swing, the mamaroo, is shaped kind of like the RNP though, and she likes it for both naps and just hanging out. She's always strapped in, even though it's set in the position that's basically a bowl right now. Sometimes we swaddle her and then strap, sometimes we strap and then tuck a blanket around her.
