Babies: 9 - 12 Months

3 week old in ICU-HELP!!!!

Our dear friends 3 week old DD is in the hospital with pnuemonia and whooping cough. We would like to send something to her at the hospital because she is going to be in there for another 1-2 weeks at least (she has been there a week already). What should we send (flowers, fruit arrangement, other ideas)....

TIA!

Re: 3 week old in ICU-HELP!!!!

  • Hi - my son was in the NICU for 12 days after birth and I really appeciated when people gave me gift cards for either food, or gas.  You spend a lot of time at the hospital and food is not cheap, and you spend a lot of time driving to the hospital.  Other than that, I really appreciated kind cards or emails.  I'll keep your friend in my thoughts.

  • If she is in the ICU they may not let you have things like flowers or lots of food in there.  I would say send a card now and then wait 'till they get home and send something then.  Could you clean for them or make some food for them to eat when they get home?
  • my boys were in the NICU for over a month...Gift cards to resturants near by or gas cards would be great...

I know. I just told DH that we need to call the hospital and ask if and what they allow.

  • Flowers are nice and all, but I totally second the idea of gas cards, gift cards to local restaurants, a cleaning service, or even just a visa gift card. My girls were in the NICU for 3 and 4 weeks and we spent over $1,000 on gas going back and forth and god knows how much on meals we picked up on the way.
  • Ditto pp. Please don't send flowers or fruit to the NICU. They don't allow food there and flowers will just be in the way in a very sterile environment. What they will really, really appreciate is food (either a gift card for restaurants near the mall or a meal that you make and leave at their house) or gas gift cards. You can also offer to care for any pets they may have. Food and pet care were the things we were most grateful for while ds was in the NICU. If you do take a meal to their house, just take it and leave it on the porch in a cooler, don't make them try to be home to meet you because they're going to want to spend all their waking time at the NICU and all their home time sleeping.

  • Thanks for your ideas! I think we have decided to do the gift cards to local rest. thing.
  • take them a basket of snacks, gas card, money for a hotel,
