Advice needed re: Plan B pill

I'm kind of freaking out right now and I'm not sure what to do. Embarrassed This also isn't the sort of question I feel comfortable talking to people about IRL so I came here. Also, I'm not looking for any judgment or pity -- just advice.

MH and I did the deed last night and we didn't use a condom. We know we want another child at some point, but we're sort of gray on the timing. We were thinking more like a 3-3.5 year age gap but we weren't totally sure. This little incident would put us at about 23 months. I shouldn't have let it happen, but since I started taking Lexapro for anxiety, I NEVER "o" during sex, and last night we both"o'ed" right at the same time so it was one of those things I didn't stop in a moment of weakness...

So other than the spacing of our children, we are also trying to sell our house and then move. Our house is on the market but nothing's happening, and we didn't really want to have another kid until we moved. Also, I counted out and if I got pregnant I'd be due around September, the same month I'm supposed to be a bridesmaid in my brother's wedding.

MH's advice is "meh, whatever happens it will be fine but take Plan B if you are really worried about it."

So -- should I go get Plan B? Have any of you ever taken it? I read it makes people sick. But then again so does pregnancy haha. I think I ovulated on the 8th, so I'm definitely in a fertile window but I'm hoping the pill would still be effective if I decided to take it now. I would also have to leave work to go find it and I'm just not sure what I want to do.

For the record, if anyone has the memory of an elephant, I had confessed we also had an unprotected incident back in June. We were on vacation with my family, 30 minutes from a store, and didn't have anything with us. But it's not something we do all the time. I think it's just easier to slip up knowing we want another child, we're just not sure when. Maybe this condom plan isn't working very well for us...

  • Honestly, I don't feel like I can give you advice as to whether you should take Plan B or not. That's really up to you. Only you can decide if you're more comfortable doing that or risking having another baby sooner than planned. That being said, I'm sure it will be fine either way.

I have taken Plan B twice (both times after a condom breaking - once was the first time my now-husband and I had sex...we were both like "wow, what were the odds of that?!")  It didn't make me sick and didn't even mess with my cycle much, but that's just me.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

You're probably right, I know it's up to me to decide what I'm comfortable with. I'm just really not sure what I want to do. Blarg. Glad to hear Plan B didn't affect you very much.

  • I took it a couple of years ago and I didn't have any side effects, except that it messed with AF a little (threw off my cycle.)

  • For us, baby number 2 wasn't planned.  We were using condoms, and we weren't being as diligent as we should have been.   We wanted to start trying again when DD was 12-18 months old.  DD will be 15 months old when baby # 2 arrives.

I was stressed about how we were going to make things work, and if this was what was right for us.   My mom said, "If everyone waited for the right time, no one would have kids. There are always the 'what if's?' or the 'if we wait for 6 months....'"

I'm very excited about meeting our new baby, but it took me a while to wrap my head around it.

I've been in your position a few times since having DD. I know the stream of "what ifs" that are running through your mind. It's consuming. But try not to panic. For us, we had issues with condoms. I found it hard to be diligent. We had unprotected sex the night I had ovulated and the next day. Stupid. But we did. I was a mess. We really were on the fence about another baby and we certainly knew we were not in a financial place for another one. But still we did. So, no judgements here. I waited it out and took tests expecting to see a positive but nope. I got my period right on schedule. Of course we didn't learn from this experience and this happened 2 more times. I went on the pill, missed a couple of pills, thought I was pregnant again, but wasn't. I've been really good the past 2 months at taking my pills. I feel like a dumb teenager. DH thinks its my biological clock taking over since I'm 37. He thinks my body naturally wants another baby. I'm not sure I buy that. As for the Plan B, I never took it. I can't comment on that. My theory was if its meant to be it'll be....or it won't.

Thanks for your response. Makes me feel a little better to know I'm not the only grown woman who messes up sometimes! I'm still so unsure what to do. I kind of agree with your theory about if it was meant to be... but I'm just so torn. It wouldn't exactly be ideal.

  • I took plan b once years ago. It made me horribly sick. Puking, cramps, boob pains, the whole 9. Sure beats an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy though.
Good luck for you whatever you are going to decide!

  • I've taken it, and had no side effects. But I also tolerate hormonal bc very well, and I know it doesn't agree with all women.

If you O'd on the 8th, though, you were probably at the very end of your fertile window and the chance that you conceived from sex late yesterday are pretty slim. I know that may not be comforting since it could still happen, but you could play the odds and wait it out, since if it happens then it might really have been meant to happen. The next two weeks will be nervewracking though.

And assuming you are not pg, you may want to consider a different method of bc if you decide you want to shoot for a 3 to 31/2 yr age gap. Something you won't have to worry about tossing aside when you get caught up in the heat of the moment.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

"There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.

  • We all have oops moments. Plan B is not the same as an abortion. It prevents conception (like bcp) and implantation. If you're certain that now isn't the right time for you, please feel guilt free about taking this medication.

If you really do feel that whatever happens, happens, take the chance and see what your body does.

  • That's what it's there for, unless you have theological objections about interfering with "God's plan" for conception.  If you are family planning and are not ready for another child, by all means use it in the time window while you can.

I have never taken it but I have friends who have and with no issues. I agree with the rest of this. Could you look into spermicides you put in before you start DTD so you wouldn't need condoms or have to stop once you get going?

  • I have never taken it, but I wouldn't feel guilty about doing so if I were in a similar situation. We would be in a world of hurt if we had another child right now, which is why I chose an IUD. I freaking love this thing. And you can have it taken out at any time and regain fertility relatively quickly. Good luck to you with whatever you choose.

  • Got busy at work but thanks ladies for all the responses. MH think we should just let it go and see what happens. I'm still completely torn. It's not great timing, but we do know we want another one and I feel like maybe we should be grateful for any baby this PCOS body wants to give me. I still don't know. But thanks again for hearing me out and weighing in!

  • I have taken it twice, both with SO, when condoms broke. I didn't get sick the first time I took it, the second time I was nauseas. I can't give you any advice on whether or not to take it, that has to be completely up to you.

  • Im no help because i have never used birth control or plan B.

But if you are positive you dont want a baby for another 2 years then id say plan b is your avenue.
