Sleep help

Okay... DD wakes up every 3 hours like clockwork!!!  I'm exhausted and I know it would be better for her to get more thorough sleep.  If I go to rub her back/pop her bink back in - she tries to sit up because she sees me.   If I pick her up, she just screams untils he nurses.  We can't co-sleep.  Any advice?  CIO's about it, isn't it??

Re: Sleep help

  • I'm having the same exact issue, and my DS is so stubborn, CIO won't even work.  He'll fuss until I whip out the boob, even if he just ate!  I'm at a loss....Hope you find a solution!

  • Glad to hear I'm not alone! DD is pretty stubborn too!!  And if DH tries to help.. she just screams and he gets frustrated.  Last night I was letting her fuss, and she tried to stand up in her crib - her arm slipped and she hit her face.  Ugh!

  • Ugh, I'm sorry! I was going to suggest sending your DH in but I see that you've tried that. Do you have all the basics covered- dark room, white noise, bedtime routine?

I'm going to sound harsh here because we have been through something similar and I wish someone would have put it like this when they were talking to me... if this is what happens every time- when you pick her up she eventually gets to nurse- then of course she is going to scream every time until she gets to. That's what she's been conditioned to expect. That is now her routine. To make it stop, at some point you'll have to break that routine and show her it's not time to nurse. Otherwise, she will more than likely continue waking (and expecting to nurse to help get back to sleep) night after night because that is what her body is now used to. I'm not saying CIO is your only option, but repeating the cycle again and again is only going to continue to reinforce her habit.

DD was stuck on 2 different night feedings that I had to "force" her to drop (at 2 different times). I also BF. What I did was to go in her room and hold her in the glider for as long as it took for her to fall back to sleep (could have been an hour and a half, could have been 10 minutes depending on the time). I knew she wanted to nurse because that's what she was used to doing. Yes, it was hard to not just give in and allow her to nurse. That would have been the "easy" thing to do at least in the moment, because most of the time it would have been much faster to just nurse her and put her back down. But I knew I didn't want to keep doing that night after night when I knew she didn't NEED to nurse nutritionally and it was affecting both of our sleep quality. It took quite a few hard nights but she eventually got it. We never did much CIO for nighttime. I started CIO for naps AFTER we had taken care of the nighttime issues via the method I described, but that's another story.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do!

  • This may be something you're already doing too...are you making sure her tummy's full before putting her to bed?  Maybe push back dinner time a little so that she's 'eating' closer to bed time.  It may help her stay asleep longer.  Just a suggestion...
