What's your plan if labor starts at work?

I just realized that I haven't put much thought into what I will do if I go into labor at work. If my water breaks or contractions start I figured I would just drive myself home and wait for my husband. I will leave work immediately if I experience any regular contractions (I'm not feeling any obvious contractions yet) no matter how far apart they are.  I guess I figure that chances are I will still be capable of driving and if things progress more quickly than expected then I will pull over and call 911.  Is this crazy and or stupid? I guess I'm not really sure what to expect and I don't want to go to the hospital right away. Work is about 30 minutes from home and home is about 30 minutes from the hospital. Work is about 30 minutes from the hospital.

Just curious how others plan to handle going into labor at work.

  • I don't care how slowly I think labor is starting, if I start having contractions at work, I'm dialing for back-up. I have an hour + commute, and I've experienced what real contractions feel like. I don't want to be responsible for an accident.

So, my plan is, to call my husband and have him take one other person to come pick me up, so that the other person can take my car from the facility, whether I'm going home or to the birthing center from there.

My go-bag and the car seat will be in the car from here on out.

  • I haven't put a ton of thought into what I'll do, but I know that many of my coworkers would be more than happy to drive me if need be.  It's about an hour from work to the hospital, though, so it's not going to be that convenient!

  • I work at an univ so we have campus police and a medical center.  I can or one of co-workers can call emergency.

My problem is that I still have to get stuff for my hospital bag, comfy PJs for after, socks.  For some reason I'm down to 4 pairs of socks, I have no idea where they went to lol.

  • It would be great if I went into labor at work since I'm delivering there! Plan would be to call DH and he'd come down ASAP ... I only work 6 floors down from ld

    Jan 15  NOV siggy challenge:

  • I had planned to work til the 21st...complications sent me into maternity leave early. Anyway, the plan was for me to send my students to the classroom next to mine to get the teacher, she was going to put on a movie or something for the kids until a sub got there and  while I waited for my husband to come get me. It's about an hour commute for me to go home, then 2 hours in the opposite direction to the hospital...so it made more sense for him to come to me :)

If my water broke, I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to explain that to 20 first grade children...but the plan was about the same. Get them out of the room and occupied so they didn't worry.

As it was, when I did semi-collapse at work, in front of the children...they were taken to another teachers room, I was taken to the nurses office and eventually taken to the doctor before my hubby could get there. All the teachers on my campus are women and they over ruled me when I said I would wait for DH. He ended up being 15 minutes behind us by the time we got to the doctor.

It was never in the plan for me to drive anywhere...too many things are unknown and I didn't want to risk me losing control of the car, or something like that.

  • My work is less than 5 minutes down the street from my hospital. I plan on asking for a ride there, and DH will meet me there with the bag. He works 15 min away. I should start having towels on hand so I don't ruin anyone's car. I will just leave my car at work since we have our own lot.

  • Well, I work at a hospital, so my plan was that someone would just wheel me over to labor and delivery. Luckily, we didn't have that problem. lol.

  • If I went into labor at work I gave 3 of my coworkers instructions regarding what to do. They all had the number to my doctor, who practices across the street from my office, my SO and my parents to call as well as the address to my hospital and the backup hospital in case I was too far gone into the labor process to make it uptown. My last week at work I drove in so I also prepaid the parking attendant for each day and left the ticket on my desk. My supervisor was also very supportive and understanding so I knew I was in good hands if anything happened
  • My husband works about 10 minutes from my office so if we happen to drive seperate the day I go into labor I'm planning on playing it by ear.  My hospital is only about 20-25 minutes away so if I feel like I can drive I will.  If I'm in pain/too nervous I will just call him and leave my car at work.

  • I only work 20-30 minutes from the hospital, that being said, regardless of how I feel if labor were to start while I'm at work, I will NOT be driving myself.

There are plenty of people here who have already told me they will be driving me.  My boss also has all MH's #'s to be reached at work should I not think to call him right away.

  • I would call DH to come get me and bring me home or to the hospital depending on how I felt.  I only work 20 minutes from home, but with the way my contractions progressed last time, I wouldn't have been able to drive through them and it just isn't worth the risk to me.

  • I work in the hospital I'm delivering at, so my plan is to walk down to the maternity ward which is literally one corridor away from my office...my bag is packed and will be in the car as of tomorrow, my hubby wanted to get my car seats shampooed today (i swear HE is the one that's nesting!!) before he reinstalls the car seat but its at home, ready and waiting and he's practiced installing it in both of our cars, so I think we'll be good.  I'm just worried about my water breaking in front of one of my patients!  I think that might be traumatic for them LOL
