At what age do kids stop using the stroller?

I am expecting our second DD in April and I am trying to figure out what to do about strollers.

DD1 will be turning 3 when DD2 is born. We currently have the Uppababy Vista, which could work with a rumble seat. The weight limit on the rumble seat is 35lbs and DD1 is 28lbs now. She is also in 97percentile for height, so she wouldn't have much space in there. Initially I thought this is no a good solution, but my husband brought up a point that DD1 may grow out of the stroller age very soon.

When did your children stop using the stroller?

One more consideration is that we do go on long walks regularly.

  • While I did end up getting a double jogging stroller after my 2nd was born, I used it for running... and my boys were 22 months apart. But, when my 3rd son was born and my oldest was 3, I would either wear the baby or my oldest would ride his tricycle on longer walks. We gave away the double stoller when my middle son turned 4 and our youngest was 2 ish, they are 21 months apart and got a single jogging stoller. by then my 4 yr old would ride his scooter or bike with training wheels.

  • My son was born when my twins were 23 months. We stopped using the stroller at about 20 months. They prefer to walk and are not runners. Since the baby has been born, I have only ever used a single stroller for him. Unfortunately, we don't go on long walks. We can't walk on our street.
  • Thank you for your responses! I guess I will save the money I would have spent on a double stroller and get a rumble seat instead, just in case.

DS was 2.5 years when DD was born.  He would still ride in a stroller but was also happy to walk along side us and was well behaved doing so.  We chose to get a rumble seat for our UppaBaby and I think it was a good decision.  We've only used it twice; once at the zoo and once at a large mall when we were there for a few hours.  Other times he either walks or I would wear DD and he would go in the stroller.

  • My son was 3 when we had #2.   We never got a double stroller.   I kept the ergo in the basket of the stroller so the few times that he asked to go in the stroller because he was tired of walking, I then wore DS2 so dS1 could go in the stroller.    We used a bumbleride flyer when he was a newborn and it has a full flat recline so we never used the car seat to make a travel system.

  • We never got a double and the kids are 2.5 years apart. DS had basically stopped using a stroller by two though. The only time we used it was for long walks. By the time it was warm enough to do walks after DD was born, DS was three and could ride his balance bike when we walked.

  • We only use strollers for long walks and mall visits. Both kids (1.5 and 3.5) prefer to walk.

  • DS stopped using a stroller right before the twins were born He was just 2. The girls would prefer NOT to use a stroller... but they outnumber us, so I sort of force the issue.

DS at 2 would go on walks w/ FIL that would last close to 2 hours, and rarely would he need carried.

  • We stopped using the stroller w ds around 14-15 months and have never used one w dd.

  • My daughter stopped using the stroller right around when she turned 3. My almost-2-year-old rarely uses the stroller either, but that's mainly because she recently learned to walk and is taking full advantage of her newfound independence...whoo hoo.

  • My girls are 21 months apart and we had a double stroller for the zoo and things like that but most places we went, we carried DD#2 or she was in the stroller and DD#1 walked.  We did get both girls umbrella strollers that we found way easier once my younger DD was able to sit up on her own.  We used those often for walks, the airport and such but honestly, once DD #1 was walking on her own, she really prefered to not use a stroller and we often ended up just using hers (or her part of the double) for our coats, bags, etc.  DD #2 stopped using hers at around 3 although we ended up carrying her way more than we did DD#1.

  • We have a Baby Jogger Summit XC double. My LOs are 21 months apart. They are now 2 and a half and 4 and a half and we use the stroller every day to take the oldest to preschool and when it was warmer I would run with them daily. So for us it was a good investment. Both of my LOs are at 98% for height and they still fit well in it.
  • I still use it for my three year old, but only in certain situations.  She often walks, but if I am doing a big walk or I need to get something done, she goes in.  She gets tired so it is nice to have.  I think it is a good wait and see item.
