Anyone's husband/partner on Norvasc/amlodipine when you conceived?

Congratulations to you all! I am trying to find couples that were able to get pregnant when the guy was taking norvasc (generic amlodipine). We are TTC and I recently learned this could potentially impact H's ability to fertilize an egg and there is no way to test for it either. We are seeing a specialist with him in another month (as soon as we could get it) to see if it's safe for him to try a different medication, but I'd feel a lot better hearing from someone who was able to conceive with their husband on this.

Thanks so much!

  • My DH used to sell Norvasc and he has never heard of that.  It is not in the PI (package insert) and through all of his training this was never ever brought up.  Maybe a rumor? But not valid.

  • I wish it was a rumor but calcium channel blockers are associated with inabiity to fertilize the egg and there have been studies (mostly animal however) that have shown this. One in particular has been looked at as a form of male birth control.

I am so hoping there is no issue with us, but without a way to test I just have to hope we are able to get a BFP before his specialist appointment or there is a safe alternative we can try. His PCP wasnt comfortable switching him since the reason he is on it is due to HTN associated with congenital decreased kidney function. Id feel 100% better if I could find someone who did get pregnant when their H was taking this.

  • Have you actually tried getting pregnant? I probably wouldn't panic until I knew there was an actual issue.

If the only possible concern is inability to get pregnant, go ahead and start trying.

  • yes we have been trying for about 5 months which is why I was concerned. If we arent pregnant in another few months I will have to be tested, but if everything is normal on my end (and I am charting/ tracking ovulation, etc so it seems to be) there is no way to test for this issue with him. I was just hoping to hear from someone whos husband was on this and got pregnant so there is some re-assurance. We will be asking his specialist too but it be great to know it didnt prevent some others from still getting pregnant.
  • Hello Sally
I know this is an older post but I was searching for info on this very topic wanting some reassurance. My husband is also on Amlodipine for congenital heart disease. We've been ttc for a year with no luck. How did things work out for you? Did you get pregnant whilst husband was taking Amlodipine? My husband has had a analysis which was normal but heard that calcium channel blockers can still affect them even if appearance and motility are good!? I hope that everything has worked out well for you and would appreciate any info you may have. Thank you x
