Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Formula: Alimentum vs. Soothe

LO is currently on Alimentum formula. Our pediatrician thinks she has a problem with breaking down proteins. The formula is very expensive, so I have considered finding a similar alternative. I've read information on the Gerber Soothe formula and it seems like a possible option for us. Has anyone else made a switch from one to the other successfully? Or have any input?

Of course, I'm not going to make a switch unless our pediatrician gives us the OK. Their office, however, only recommends Similac brands and I can't get them to call me back on this issue. I'm going to try again next week (hopefully with more success).

Re: Formula: Alimentum vs. Soothe

  • DD has a milk protein allergy and eats Nutramigen. I could be wrong but I thought the Soothe is not for protein problems?

  • Definitly look into having the Alimentum covered by your health insurance, esp if your pedi thinks she has a problem digesting milk proteins.
  • We used Alimentrum last year for DS and now this year for DD. it's expensive but with a protein allergy the only options are that or enfamil nutramagin. Soothe is still milk based and is most similar to Similac sensitive. Have you tried soy? DD can't drink soy formula either but DS has been able to tradition from Alimentrum to silk soy milk fairly easily once he was 12 months. We are going to try soy formula with DD again in a couple months.

All our pediatrician told us is she thinks she has a problem breaking down proteins. From what I've read, the Soothe formula already has the proteins partially broken down. That's why I was thinking of trying to switch. She didn't mention an allergy, but that could be what LO has. I honestly don't know.

That's why I definitely wouldn't do anything without our pediatrician's consent. I was just wondering what others are going through with this.

She originally thought it was a lactose issue, but we had the same results with soy formula.

  • It's possible it's a problem with lactose and soy, hence why you didn't have relief with soy. We're using gentlease which is also a partially broken down formula like soothe is I think. I can't comment on it vs alimentum etc as she's only been on this and similac advanced. I don't consider soothe/gentlease/sensitive to be comparable to fully broken down formulas like alimentum but if you haven't tried it, your little one might be ok on it as it's a middle ground between regular formulas and the ones for allergies.

  • DS1 was supplemented with Alimentum due to reflux and weight gain issues. He did great on it, but I also wondered if a sensitive formula would be suitable. We had constipation/spit up issues with soy formula, which was why we were recommened alimentum. At around 4 months his reflux symptoms subsided, and my pedi gave us the ok to try similac sensitive. He did totally fine on it, and we used it with no issues until 12 months, when he made a good transition to cows milk. I hope this helps, GL!
