My daughter is almost 3. Our first appointment with a developmental ped is this week. Can anyone tell me what we can expect from this visit? I really have no clue what will be done, but I do have a short list of questions and concerns prepared.
FWIW, She has a chromosome abnormality, behavioral issues, sensory issues, hypotonia, and is receiving ST, PT, OT, and special education through her school district. We also have seizure concerns associated with her syndrome that we will be asking about.
Re: Developmental Ped
He asked us lots if questions. He wanted to know what our concerns are and when they started. He took out a bunch of toys to see what our son could do. He told us his findings and what the causes could be. He ordered a bunch of tests. He spent over an hour with us.
My son's initial dev ped assessment was in October. He was 3y9m. We were there for about 5 hrs. There was both a dev pedi and a school psychologist present and for much of the time, one of them was in one room with DH and/or me asking us lots of questions and filling out checklists with us, while the other was in the other room (often with one parent) doing assessments with our son. We got very little feedback that first time but they had us come back 6 weeks later for the ADOS and then a week after that we went back for a feedback appt when the dev pedi gave us her diagnoses and recommendations. We'll also be getting a full written report and she scheduled a follow-up appt for 6 months from now.
Hope it goes well!
Also, fortunately this assessment didn't seem to be stressful for my son. I was very relieved about that as he's been overwhelmed by previous ones. I'm sure that's partly familiarity; he's had assessments and lots of therapies since last September and he warmed up to the evaluators pretty quickly. I would just try to write down questions in advance and also take notes while you're there if you can.
We're really lucky in that DD is really great at evals appointments. She's been to the doctor for so much, she's pretty used to it. As long as we promise her no blood draws.
Thanks!!
