Preconception Appointment

I am just curious if anyone has had one, what their experience was?  Helpful at all?  Has anyone had a mc and had a Dr. that took the time out to make sure levels were okay when they found out they were pg instead of waiting until 9 weeks?  We are trying to conceive again and I need some help so that maybe a mc can be prevented if it's progesterone levels or something that's caught early.  My Dr at Paradise Valley OBGYN didn't test my progesterone or anything, and never saw me after I've stopped bleeding to make sure levels are back down and everything is out.  I want to be sure we have a good Dr. this time around who is there to help, not just send me home and cancel my appointments because they "aren't necessary".  Thank you!!

Re: Preconception Appointment

  • Unless you are over 35 or have a serious medical condition which could be affected by your pregnancy, i wouldn't bother with preconception appt.  They won't do anything special , except maybe give  you advice as to when to try to conceive and tell you to take folic acid and a multivitamin while trying to get pregnant.   Then they may tell you to come back to see a doctor if you are having problems getting pregnant.  If you are under 35 they will say wait one year of TTC before seeing a doctore, while if you are over 35 they may say wait 6 mos.

Early miscarriages can't really be prevented .  Things happen w/genetic mapping and dna that don't go right and the embryo wil stop growing.  They are really more common that you might realize, even in women in their 20s and 30s.  I'm sorry for you miscarriage, i know they can be troubling (i've had 5 but tried to get pregnant at 39 yrs old).  It's just something that could happen.  Now if you had recurrent miscarriages, that could be another story.  You didn't state your age, but you look pretty young in your picture.  Typically they doctors don't test your hcg levels to make sure they've gone back to zero and they don't really test your progesterone.   I know they tell you to wait a month before TTC again.  But honestly, they are pretty common, so life in itself really is a miracle given all the little embryo had to do to turn into a baby.

I think I'd just start to try again as soon as you feel you are emotionally ready.  I wouldn't worry about the doctors or what they say.  They honestly just don't really treat you too much for a miscarriage unless it's a recurrent or they have to do soemthing like a D&C.

And if you are in your late 30s, the miscarriage rate is even higher and that's probably just due to your eggs being older.  But hang in there!! Good luck and keep trying.  TTC is really a crazy roller coaster.  Best wishes.

This!  I see Maggie the PA and LOVE her.  I've never been pregnant, but even in speaking about IF she's been amazing.

This is actually where I went.  I never got to see a Dr. because I was only 7 weeks and had bleeding so I saw Margaret.

Thank you for your response!  I am 27.  We are trying again lol.  I had a natural mc so I'm just letting my body do it's thing, and if we get pg then it is exactly what you said, a miracle.

  • I had something similar to a preconception appt. I had super irregular periods and I had been diagnosed with PCOS. I met with a NP and she went over my blood work, did a vagional ultrasounds to look at my ovaries, and prescribed progesterone. It turned out that 4 days after my "preconception" appointment I found out I was pregnant.

  • I have been in your exact situation, last year right before Christmas I received the news I had a blighted ovum , it took them several appointments and ultrasounds to come to that diagnosis, I even guessed it was that before them, but I naturally mc'd and never went back for another appointment to check my levels. They never called me to. Me and my husband waited a couple months and just tried again, I am now 19 weeks pregnant and chose not to go back to them. It was hard to get excited about this pregnancy at first but figured its all in Gods plan, Best of luck to you!

  • Well I had a precon app....ended up being pg a few days later lol. But I did mc that time. I was 30. My doc did eveey test under the sun. A loss is a loss and no matted what your age you should be tested. I became pg my next cycle but was considered highrisk due to my mc.
