Kindle Fire HD vs iPad

We want to get DD a Kindle Fire HD or an iPad either the mini or a refurbished 2nd generation for Christmas. She will be three in February. I know it seems like a big gift for a three year old, but DH and I will use it a lot as well as our laptop that we keep in the living room downstairs is on its last leg. If you have either or were trying to decide between the two, what are the pros and cons of each? I want it for movies, music, games, and the camera and photos. If we get the iPad, we will probably get the Fisher Price apptivity kid case. Does anyone know of a good kid case for the Kindle Fire HD? TIA!

  • I would never get an ipad or Kindle for even my 7 yo, but that is me.  They get enough exposure to electronics w/o having their own.  But... that is another discussion.

I think the ipad is better and I have the kindle fire.

  • Our kids use DH's old iPad 1. They love it. I want to get a second one but I think it's too expensive. We got them leap pads each instead. This way they have each their own. But if you already have an old iPad you're not using, I think it's a great thing for a three year old.

  • my dad bought an ipad for us this summer.   My older son loves to use it.    it's not "his"(although he thinks it belongs to him)   my dad got it for all of us to use.   We have in this case   https://www.gumdropcases.com/drop-series-the-new-ipad-case.html    my son has dropped it and my younger guy grabbed it once and threw it and it was fine!

  • I'd go with the iPad.  Just more functional in my opinion.  MIL had the Kindle Fire and had lots of problems with it - she returned it for an iPad and loves it.  Our DS will be getting an iPad for Christmas this year too.

  • We have both. I don't really download apps to the kindle so i can't answer to the activites available. But I don't think you have the variety. We use it as for streaming video when we need a break with DD. She is 2.5 and can now turn it on and get a video to start if its on my carousel but it isn't as easy to navigate. She can turn on the ipad, flip pages and even knows the different Icon folders. And we can still stream our amazon prime on it. I prefer the ipad for activities and child user ability but do love my kindle for myself. We have them both in leather folios and they are fine.

  • We had an iPad2. Both DD use it and it has been a cause of many fights between them.  We will be gettinga Kindle Fire HD.   iPad cost way more.

  • DH has the iPad 2 and I have the original iPad. We don't go anywhere without them. Its sad, really. I recently bought my mom the Kindle Fire HD, and was very impressed with it. DH said he thinks the iPad is still superior. I'm not sure how I feel about buying an iPad for a child, though. Seems too much money and machine for it to belong to a child. DD1 loves to get her hands on our iPhones and iPads, but they are ours, and she knows it. She has the leap frog "iPad" and she loves it. She calls it her "pad". I would start with that, if you are unsure. At least you know you are getting only kid friendly content on it. There are no guarantees with the Kindle or iPad. Once you play with either one, you won't want to let LO play with it ;)

  • I have an iPad2 and honestly, DS uses it more than me particularly when we are out and need to keep him occupied like during the other kids' ballgames, ect. I have the Trident Kraken case on it and it has been dropped on the cement multiple times at ballgames and is in perfect condition.

  • I agree with getting an iPad. We have both an iPad and Kindle Fire in our house, and I am not really a fan of the Kindle. I LOVE the iPad and think it has WAY more versatility than the Kindle.
