Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How often do you bathe baby?

I have a 4 week old.  How often do you bathe your baby?  I heard somewhere - at a class or something that you should only bathe a newborn once or twice a week, but am wondering what others do.  Plus my DS has really dry skin on his face, so I don't want to make it worse...

Re: How often do you bathe baby?

  • At 4 weeks we gave DD a bath 3 times a week. It wasn't until almost 3 months that we started doing it every night, but mostly so we could clean her up after a day at daycare.

  • We have bathed her every day since she came home from the hospital. It really helps keep her on a routine and she hasn't had problems yet. You can always use Eucherin lotion on his dry skin, that is what our Pedi told us if DD's face got too dry.
  • I bathe DS twice a week.  If he was smelly,  I might do it more frequently.
  • at around 4 weeks we discovered that baths were a key to helping with colic so we started an everynight bath.  after the colic we moved to every couple of days - it just depends on the night.
  • I bathe DD every third day.  I wash her face and neck every day and sometimes run a wash cloth over her hair if I think it looks dirty before bath day.

  • Since coming home we only bathe DD 1-2x/week.  And the reason being, she hates baths and she doesn't sweat/smell.  We did bathe her 3 times this week, but 2x were b/c of diaper blow-outs.  Ick!
  • BTW, DanceDance; my daughter makes the same face as your son and its sooooo cute!
  • after her belly button fell off we bathed her every third day, around 2 months we started every other day, and around 3 months every night to establish a bedtime routine.

  • We are trying to establish a bedtime routine now so we do it every night for now. If you are worried about dry skin, try rubbing him/her with baby lotion after. Once we get bedtime established, I will probably do it at most 4 times a week. I say just play it by ear. If you think baby needs it. Oh and don't forget the creases: diaper area, behind knees, behind ears, neck, armpits!
  • We bathe DD every night. She LOVES the bath. If she didn't, we would probably to it less often.

  • I've just started to give ds a nightly bath.  He doesn't have dry skin and I'd like to start the beginning of a wind down routine with him.  He's been so fussy this week that it seems to help him calm down.

  • We'd like to do it every night...but he loves the bath so much that after we take him out, he screams for a while.  So we do it maybe 2-3  times a week.  I do wipe down his face and neck with a warm towel every day to get off all the crud from spitting up/drooling.

  • We bathe DD twice per week or more often if there's a poop explosion. We had a couple poop explosions this week Tongue Tied
  • Around 3 months we started a nightly bed routine, which includes bathtime.  Our girls were in the NICU for their first 13 weeks of life and there they had baths every other day. Our pediatrician said the earlier we start a bedtime routine the better...probably why our girls started sleeping in 6-7 hour stretches around 4 months....
  • During the first couple of months we bathed him every 3-4 days. Now we give him a bottom wash-off first thing in the AM and right before bedtime. We hold him under the faucet and soap him up. We started this because of a bad diaper rash and decided that we like the routine. It helps keep his diaper area looking and feeling great. I wash his face and hands, too (no soap for his face.)

  • DD gets bathed 2x per week, or more if she's smelly.

  • I bathe DS 2-3 times a week.
  • missbeezers: where did you get your baby's name from? The author, Neil Gaiman, has a character named Story.
  • I give DS a bath every other day unless he is stinky or had a really bad poopy diaper. On days he doesn't get a bath, I wipe his face, neck, hands and feet with a warm washcloth. I put baby lotion on him daily because he has dry skin.
  • We would bathe DD about 3 times a week at that age.  Now, that she's 4.5 months old, we bathe her every other day.
