For those of you who......

still are breast feeding, but weaning to WCM, what is your schedule like? How did you start?

I feel like my supply is diminishing, and I have zero left in my freezer stash. DS doesnt really care for the WCM so I'm concerned what to do. Thanks!

  • I FF since DS was 2 months (ish) but I think it pretty much works the same. We didn't do a "weaning" process- as our pedi put it, it's unnecessary. We went straight to WCM and took away bottle (some will disagree that you need to do it all at once). Even though it was very hard the first couple days, I think it was worse for us than him.

One suggestion I have that helped us, is to remember that even though the recommendation is 12-20 oz of WCM it is perfectly OK for LO to get less than that. On a good day, LO will drink the minimum... most days he is probably around 5-6 oz. However, I make sure to feed him yogurt, cheese, etc for calcium. I use yo-baby, which is a whole milk yogurt. Make sure your LO gets plenty of healthy fats...don't beat yourself up about the exact amount that LO is drinking (I'm still working on this), and don't overdo the dairy either. GL

This, we switched to WCM cold turkey but we didn't take away the bottles at the same time.  He was actually dropping bottles on his own so since he was making it so easy, we decided to follow his lead.  We are down to one (bedtime) a day!!

  • I nursed DS on Tuesday, before his one year appointment. That night, I decided to stop... it was painful because I was full, but not really engorged. Each day I have started to feel better... he also has been on WCM before I decided to wean, at least once of twice a day. He's done well with WCM! GL Smile

  • It takes while is what all my Mom friends say. I have offered a few times, but its hit or miss if he will drink it. Just keep trying. I wish I had better advice! I have heard to offer skim milk, some babies like that consistency better in the beginning.

  • thanks everyone. I am really nervous to quit breastfeeding. Thinking about it makes me sad :(

Does any one only nurse in the morning and at bedtime but use WCM in between?

This is where we are at.  We were nursing 5 times per day.  I cut out about one a week and started offering WCM all throughout the day.  Right now we nurse twice and he drinks about a cup of WCM each day.  He hated it at first but got used to it and gradually started to drink more as we cut out nursing sessions.

He dropped the first three feedings w/o even noticing.  I tried once to drop the first thing in the morning feeding, but there was a LOT of crying.  I gave up and decided to wait til next week when Dad's at work instead of sleeping upstairs/getting woken up!

I nursed in am and pm for about 2 weeks. I dropped the pm session first and a week later the am session. It has been good. DS gets a sippy of milk with breakfast one at pm snack time and before bed. I give him water at lunch and dinner. Occasionally he wakes in night and wants milk so I give it to him.
  • I started weaning by not offering. Then I cut the bedtime session, then wake up session, then naps. She's kept nursing at night a couple of times, but I'm walking her more and nursing her less and she's starting to sleep better. I give her a cup at her usually nursing times and at meals, but she really only wants it at meals. I'm not worried about how much milk she drinks, she doesn't really need it.

  • DS didn't really like it at first either, but I kept giving it to him. He started drinking more of it about a week after I started taking nursing sessions out. We're down to 1-2 sessions per 24 hours now. The hardest was naptime, but I went with CIO. I hate doing it, but it works for DS. He now sleeps so much better than ever did before!

To start weaning, I would nurse him only after regular meals, then one by one drop a session every 4 days. Soon I was left with just naptime, bedtime and middle of the night. When he wakes up in the middle of the night, I now just pick him up to console him/change diaper. Once I get him completely weaned, I will stop picking him up to console him. I've learned that I have to take my time with this one. My DD was much easier to deal with weaning (she was FF though). DS still likes to nuzzle my cleavage when he's tired or hungry.

  • I'm trying the don't ask don't refuse. Right now we nurse morning and before bed during the week, and she gets some wcm at daycare. On the weekends because she is with me she wants to nurse more. But this weekend I tried more snacks and distractions and both days she only nursed once in the middle of the day.

i am ready to be done nursing, but also feel really sad about it and will especially miss the cuddles before bedtime. Such conflicting feelings. Who knows how long we will continue...I keep changing my mind daily. It's funny how it was so hard to keep going in the beginning and now so hard to stop.
