Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When did your baby start holding his/her own bottle?

I know that DS can hold a 7oz bottle and feed it to himself-he does it every Wednesday when my parents watch them. He will hardly do it for me though. Guess he knows that Mommy will do it for him.

I'd love for them to start holding their own bottles!!! It would make feedings go so much faster!

Re: When did your baby start holding his/her own bottle?

  • DD started at around 5 1/2 mths, but sometimes she would have issues getting the angle right. We bought her these, and she loves them. She can feed herself in the car, so I don't have to do that awkward twist with my arm reached into the backseat. They come with regular nipples and ones that are more like a sippy cup for later on. The nipples also have these bumps on them to help with teething. Best part is they don't leak at all.

  • He can, but choses to play with it if I let him feed himself. Yesterday he actually held it and drank the whole thing, I was shocked.

  • L started a couple months ago at DC. At home she usually does not hold the bottle.

    Lillian April 17, 2012
  • Ky started at around 4.5 months... and it was a lifesaver, but now we hold it for him because he needs to burp about every 1-2 oz still otherwise he will throw most of it back up if we don't burp him.

My LO started doing it around 4 months at daycare and for daddy. (she never gets a bottle if I'm around).

But PP's comment about the car scares me...you let your child have a bottle in a moving vehicle? That's not really safe...

Yes on occasion I do, and I feel quite certain I'm not the only person who has ever done so. We have to take a major highway home in the afternoons, and occasionally there are major wrecks. When I'm sitting in stop and go traffic for 2 hours in the middle of no where with no where to pull off and a screaming child in the backseat, then I don't have much of an option.

Uh, "everybody does it" doesn't make it safe.

Look, you're a grown woman who makes a presumably educated decision when you're put in a particular situation.  But don't be surprised when other people judge you for making a choice they wouldn't.   Life is not a judgment free zone.

  • DD can hold her own bottle and sippy cup, but doesn't seem to know to tip them back to get liquid to come out. If we hold her reclined she will hold her bottle and drink fine, but in the highchair can't seem to figure it out yet.

I'm old enough and well aware enough to know life isn't a judgment free zone and am definitley not surprised by it. Was I a little defensive? Yes, probably so. Thanks for pointing it out. I generally try to be fairly open minded, but if someone is going to judge me, then they need to be willing to take a step back and evaluate how they would handle a situation. If they still feel their way is better, then go ahead and explain it to me. I'll listen. I'll admit that I'm not the perfect mother nor do I have all of the answers, but that is why I come here...to get answers. I think that's why a lot of people come here. But when the same person constantly makes holier than thou statements just to make them, then that's not helping anyone to learn why their way of thinking/doing things is possibly better. It's not helping anyone to learn anything.period. In the future, I will ignore that certain person's snide comments.

I hear ya. I've been there. It's not considered the safest thing, but until some people have been in major traffic for hours with an infant screaming for food with no signs of moving anywhere; yeah, you'll feed them in a car. You can't do EVERYTHING "by the book" with babies, they don't belong in bubble wrap and real life doesn't allow for it.

If what you did is bad, then I guess I should be crucified. Once stuck in a line of traffic for a tanker truck accident for almost 4 hours when DD ate through both of her bottles (we only packed 2 bottles because I BF and stop regularily to feed but in this case obviously couldn't) we were nowhere near a stop so after 45mins of her screaming and me trying to play with her to apease her, I took her out of her seat and fed her. Yup, right out of the car seat to BF. Good thing too because we had moved maybe 10 km over total of 7 hours. She would have been one hungry kid.

You do what you can when you can. People will judge but unless they have a better suggestion or can say they would have done something differently just take it with a grain of salt. I get what you're driving at. It's not like you sit a rolly baby on a change table and walk away for stuff and come back. To me there's levels of dangerous and feeding a baby a bottle in traffic is not high on my radar.

  • We have done this on several occasions. I would rather give her the bottle and have my full attention on the road than trying to calm her when I know what she wants. Being distracted like that seems more dangerous than letting her hold her own bottle in the car seat.
  • My son doesn't yet and hes six months.... Now I'm feeling like I should try to encourage him to. He'll hold it at times but if I let go he won't have the angle right.

Agreed. I have done it in those same circumstances. Also not a huge fan of the judging as I have experienced it more than once and seen it lots.

  • DS is just starting to get the hang of it now at almost 7 months. However, my DD never held her own bottle. She could, but she never wanted to.
