Dropping a pumping session?

I pump three times a day now, at 10, 1 and 4.  I am getting enough milk for the next day, and sometimes more than DS needs.  I'm thinking of dropping to two pumping sessions, at 11 and 3.  I'm worried I may not be able to pump enough in 2 sessions, though, and don't really want to mess with a good thing.  On the other hand, 3 times a day is really blowing holes in my schedule.

Has anyone started off fine and dropped a session?  Did you still get enough milk?

Re: Dropping a pumping session?

  • I wouldn't drop a session, yet. I would wait until 10-11 months to start going down to 2. At the begining I was pumping more in 2 sessions, then DS needed, but the 3rd  helped me build a freezer stash. Now at 7 months, I just pump enough at 3 sessions.

I do treat myself on Fridays to 2 pumping sessions, because over the weekend DS nurses so frequently that it doesn't mess with my supply.

  • I wouldn't do it yet either.  Six months is a really rough time for a lot of people with pumping and supply in general.  At that point, your child is taking the most milk without too much (if any) other food.  I would at least try to get through that time period.  Then think about dropping a session.  It really depends on your long term goals re: BFing, though.
  • Try pumping in the morning before you leave or in the evening after you get home, that way you can stop one of the work pump sessions.

  • I was very tempted to drop a session because I was getting a lot more than DD was taking in.  (I pump 3x a day - once at home, 2x at work.)  I'm glad I didn't.   At 6 months, she takes bigger bottles, I'm adding milk to her cereal, and I'm needing what I pump on the weekend to keep up with what she needs during the week.
