Measuring small at 37 weeks..

Today, I went for my first weekly appointment at 37 weeks, on the dot. I didn't get to see my usual midwife since she was sick, so I had to see the OB (who I'm not really fond of, but anyway...). He did the fundal measurement and said I am measuring 30 weeks! This has NEVER happened before. I having been carrying low and pretty compactly this whole time and my midwife has never told me that anything was up. Now I have an u/s scheduled for next week to see what's going on in there. I know baby moves a lot and his heartbeat is fine, so this is kind of out of the blue, considering how good things have been going so far.

Anyone else who has had this happen to them? He says he thinks it's because baby is really, really low, but it still makes me worried. I don't know if anyone else has asked this on here, but I thought I would ask anyways.

  • Settle your mind, get your rest and remember what others have said on here. Different practioners measure differently; and he hasn't been the one measuring you lately so he is not necessarily following the trending of your size. My dr doesn't say much about size unless I ask, and not sure how much actually gets recorded in the chart not beng privy to it myself. Do know that my dr has said she is looking at overall patterns rather than any one particular reading or measurement when she is looking at my progress. Given he has not been the one making measurements along the way, he is probably looking only at his one data point rather than your overall growth like the midwife would be. Be glad that he set up a next step rather than a lets wait and see. I am sure the us will show that all is well.

  • I would think the OB would've looked at all of the past measurements to see that maybe the baby was in a strange position this week, giving you a weird measurement.

If the overall numbers are normal, I wouldn't stress about one oddball.

  • This happened to me too.  I had the ultrasound and everything was fine. They said the baby probably just dropped and that was why the measurements were a bit off. Don't worry!
  • I'm measuring small too but still growing consistently so they aren't worried.  They said I am lucky as labor will be easier.  Good luck!

  • Same thing happened to me at my 38 week appt. Ive been measuring 1-2 weeks ahead this whole time, but last week I measured 35 weeks. My midwife said its because she's so low in my pelvis.  She wasn't worried at all. Don't stress it. It's not like your baby shrunk :) if your doc isn't worried, then you shouldn't either.

  • This happened to my cousin. She had to get two high risk ultrasounds and the baby came out over 7lbs and healthy. So yea, fundal measurements can be off.

  • Thanks :) I feel a lot better now that I've thought about it. Today we are definitely a different size than we were at the appointment yesterday, so baby was probably just all scrunched up.

I'll probably be sure that my midwife is going to be there next week when the u/s is done, just to make me feel better. haha.

  • I am measuring small too. I have had biophysical profiles every week. Turns out I have low amniotic fluid index. Since the baby is growing and is in the 40th percentile for size they are just monitoring for now. But I won't be allowed to go too much past my edd.

But as others have said, it could be nothing at all to fret about!
