HG: Anyone dealing with this?

I haven't intro'd on this board, so I hope it's ok that I'm asking this question of y'all. I've was diagnosed with HG at 8 weeks. I am currently on 8mg of zofran 4x daily, protonics and phenagren at night. Unfortunately, these medications really don't help. They keep me from throwing up for a an hour, at best, but then I'm so violently sick that my eyes look bloodshot and I'm sleeping on the bathroom floor. I've lost over 10lbs over the past 3.5 weeks. My doctor is recommending the zofran pump. Has anyone had this before? I just got back from the ER getting fluids and have fluids now for home use (DH is a paramedic/fireman so he can start the IV). I go Monday to meet with my OB to determine my next step. Can someone tell me how the pump worked for you if you used the pump? I'm really nervous about taking this step. Thanks.

Re: HG: Anyone dealing with this?

  • I haven't introduced Myself on this board either, but I also have hg! You poor thing! I am lucky, I did not need the pump and I am now 19 weeks along and feeling a little better (with the help of zofran, of course) but I felt the worst from weeks 9-17, then it eased up a little (still puking but not 10-20 times per day). I hope you also feel better in a few weeks! I found a really great community board on baby center, the girls there are super sweet and supportive a lot of them had pumps, maybe check that out? My friend also had to get one but hers did get infected, so I know that is one risk. Good luck and hang in there!

  • First of all, welcome. You are not alone. What I will tell you is to do whatever it takes to try and get the vomiting under control. I didn't do the zofran pump, but only because I didn't know about it. My vomiting became manageable at around 16 weeks. Although I was most recently treated with IV fluids this past monday.

Have you considered home health and/or doing more IV fluids at home? If I were to ever do this again, I would have to have a plan for that. The ED trips only add stress, and I know I was dehydrated way more often then I was treated. Not a good thing for baby or me.

I found that half a unisom helped way more with the nausea than the zofran. Just FYI. A lot of ppl don't know that unsiom was originally supposed to be a drug for nausea, but made ppl so tired that it was marketed as a sleep aid. I was also taken off the market for m/s with no solid evidence of teratogenesis (IMO).

I'm so sorry that you are going through this.

  • Thankyou for your replys. I'm ending up on IV fluids and IV zofran for the time being. If it works, then I will most likely go for a pick line, which will keep me from getting stuck all the time. I'll check out the babycenter site. Thankyou.

  • Hello! I had the zofran pump for my last two pregnancies because of HG. I lost 30lbs with my first and 20lbs with my second. It was a life saver. Very easy to manage and the only thing that allowed me to be able to even retain anything. I never had any trouble with it at all and there is a nurse who calls you daily because you have to report numbers. As those numbers decrease or increase they adjust your dosages.

For my first pregnancy it went in the leg but now they go in your belly. I changed every other day. I will tell you that you begin to get a little sore because you will eventually have to restick in spots. I had the pump for my first daughter for almost the whole pregnancy and for my second till 16wks. I didn't have to have it this time thankfully.

It was a pain to sleep with sometimes but I use to shove it under my pillow and you will find you are conscientious about it when you roll over at night. I also always changed the syringe before I went to bed so I wouldn't have to in the middle of the night.

You shower with it too. When I started feeling a little better I'd leave it out while I showered. But yea you get a continuous pump for 24/7. It's a slow pump but you are always getting small doses. And at times if you are experiencing bad nausea you can give yourself a bolus dose.

It did work well for me when nothing else did. Good luck hope you get some relief soon.
  • I was on and off home IVs until 12w. I had lost 35lbs at that point and couldn't function. I was spilling a lot of protein- basically everything was a giant cluster. I was admitted to the hospital and had a PICC put in right away. I was on a 12 hour TPN cycle (12 hours on getting nutrition, 12 hours off getting only fluids). It saved our lives.
