Anybody use the Tango app?

Someone told H about the Tango app, which is essentially "Free" video calls.

Does anyone really know if it's free? Meaning, your carrier doesn't bill you for using it do they?

We've had a few video calls.

I guess I should just call my carrier...that would be the most obvious way to get my answer huh?  LOL!

I gotta say tho, it's not bad, and DD loves it. Me, not so much. H has already commented on how I re-arranged the house and he is insistent on wanting to see me, but I stay out of the picture.

Anyway, if anyone else uses it, let me know your thoughts.

  • Here is from their website.
If you have a plan that limits your data consumption, then on average, approximately 2GB of data will be used if you make 450 minutes of video calls over 3G or 4G. Or connect over WiFi for free calls wherever you are!

  • We video call every other day. It may have to be less than that. Maybe only once or twice a week.

We'll see. I'll set some sort of schedule.

  • Tango is free. Just make sure you are using your home wifi and not your carrier's "cell tower data." if you go over your data it could get expensive.
  • I really agree with the last two comments. I think Tif makes a really good point that if you are out and about he will expect you to answer his call and is likely to freak out if you do not. And unless he has unlimited data it is setting up issues for him that I can see him blaming you for. If you agree to it I would tell him you will only use it on Wifi and will only answer it at the times agreed upon and warn him that it will cost a lot if he uses it on his data plan. honestly using your cell phone will allow her to walk away more which can make it worse for her to sit still.

And I think you really need to cut back the video calls, seeing each other every day cannot be healthy for either of you. I cannot remember how often Tif does it but I would ask for some advice.

Did he move to Texas or is he nearby? How often is he actually seeing her?

  • We're supposed to start EOW soon, when he "gets settled".  I'm going there next weekend to take DD to her first theater production at my sister's theater, so he'll get her during the day Saturday and a  little bit on Sunday.  But there is no set plan and I do not know when he'll want to start regular visitation.

He has unlimited data. I think I do - but I'll have to check. I told him someday he's going to have to get skype.

He's ony 90 minutes away.  It's not like he's a world away.  But...I'm not the one who doesn't have DD every day. I don't know how I would be not having direct contact with her all the time. I can't imagine. It would kill me.

It's only been a week and a half. We'll develop a pattern and I'll have to establish some rules.  I think once he gets past all these stages of a breakup and moves on, this will get easier.

I work for a major cell phone carrier. And we throttle the user if they use too much data. Even if they have unlimited. Meaning we slow down the internet connection so much that it is impossible to look anything up. We do this until the next billing cycle. Just something to think about...
  • Oh this is good information.  Thanks Kimmy girl.  I knew that "free" had a catch to it.

throttling is evil. It's happened to me three or four months now and it is positively infuriating. Unlimited data plans basically mean nothing any more.
Kimmy, this is not at all a rant to you unless you are the one who throttles my phone, in which case stop it ;, but just agreeing with your very good point!

All right! You caught me!!! I will stop the throttling!!! ;-) seriously though.... I hear that a lot and i agree it sucks. I the the major carriera sisnt think that the internet on our phones would be such a nessecity. That is why they offered "unlimited" data. Now since no one can live without their smart phone they see it as another way to make money. And most people will pay. An average cell phone bill for an average family is like 200 dollars.... And people wont pay their mortgage but they will pay the cell phone bills. We americans cant live without them!!!
