Babies: 6 - 9 Months

He does not sleep!

DS 7 months does not take naps and has been sleeping horribly at night lately.  Every once in a while (maybe once or twice a week), he will sleep for a couple hours in the afternoon.  Other than that, we're lucky if he sleeps for 20 minutes.

He's always had an issue with sleeping, but just recently his sleep patterns have changed at night.  He used to sleep 8pm-7am, but last night I was up with him at 11pm, 1am, and 5am.  This has been going on at night for a few days now.  Could be teething, but I don't feel anything coming in.

Any suggestions on what I can do to help him sleep?  DH says I should just let DS cry it out, but that's REALLY hard for me to do.

Re: He does not sleep!

  • We are struggling with this too. DS used to sleep 8-6 or 8-7 and DD would sleep 8-5 or 8-6. They are both up multiple times at night now and it's been going on for a few months now! :(  We are tired!

At first, it was learning to roll over and getting stuck (we have 2 babies, so these stages are looong). Then teething...they both have 2 bottom teeth now. We added Motrin to their before bed bottle and that helps a little. We actually plan to separate them this weekend. I hate to put them in separate rooms, but we have to try it and let them CIO a little. We don't let them CIO at all b/c we don't want the other baby to wake up.

  • Does he not nap at all? Lack of sleep can actually make kids' sleeping patterns worse. What happens when you try to get him to nap?

My DS is in a similar pattern and I think part of it is teething. How much does he eat before bed? Have you tried giving him more to eat at that feeding?

Right now, I think my DS has gotten used to eating to sleep, so we're going to start slowly decreasing the amount we put in his night time bottles.

  • My dd is a horrible sleeper! We finally did CIO but my book said to rule out teething before you try it. White noise also has really helped us.
  • What is CIO?

We give him an 8 oz. bottle right before bed.  Part of me wonders if he just wants Mommy to hold him.  We have a special bond, because I am a part-time stay-at-home mom and I'm with my kids a lot more than my husband is.  But, it's frustrating, because I went through this with DD learning how to be more independent.
