AW- Going Early- GD

I just came back from the Dr.'s had an US and my LO is weighing in at 7lbs 14oz. So I have an appointment scheduled for next Wednesday to see what hes weighing in to determine when we induce before or at 39wks.

Excited that we are going to meet him earlier than Christmas Eve and that we will be home for Christmas as a family :)

Re: AW- Going Early- GD

  • You do realize those weights can be off either way, right? Size isn't just a reason to induce early.
I had an u/s Monday and according to that my little guy is 7lbs 3oz and my EDD is 12/31. No one is talking early induction.

Seriously, take the weight with a grain of salt.

  • i agree that weight can be off but having now been induced for 2 GD pregnancies I definitely say discuss options regarding making sure the baby is as developed without the risk of other complications related to the GD. Chances are they are not only looking at overall weight but more specifically anatomy size to avoid risks of Shoulder dystocia, placenta breakdown etc. last time I was induced at 38 weeks and this time 39 weeks

This is a little different though because she has GDD.

  • Doctors were allowed to induce at 38 weeks if you were at least 3cm dialated... but my OB says it's no longer allowed until 39 weeks unless there's a medical reason.

I saw a March of Dimes commercial yesterday that stated babies are no longer considered fully developed until 39 weeks.

My SIL is a pediatrician in a hospital and she said some insurance companies are now saying they won't cover NICU stays if you induce before 39w without medical reason.

  • The practice I go to has 4 OBs and I rotate with who I see at each appointment. One of the OBs suggested I get a growth scan because she felt baby was big. At 38 weeks my LO was measuring 7lbs 15oz and that doctor who suggested the growth scan encouraged me to schedule a c section, I declined because as PPs have said the sizes can be off by 1-2 pounds in either direction.

When I met with another OB at my practice she said that early induction to avoid a "large baby" was completely unnecessary as the weights can be off on scans and because there is not much difference in weight from being born at 38 weeks to 40 weeks and is often a result of unnecessary inductions and c sections.

It's very true that growth scans can be off. But in the case of GD, when there's a reason for a baby to be big, they're less likely to be wrong and early induction is completely normal.

  • Thanks for all the feedback! My appointment next Wednesday is with a perinatologist not my OB to just double check everything and to make the ultimate call on when to go. I will definitely bring my questions to the appointment. My OB discussed with me the Shoulder dystocia (scary!) and placenta breakdown. They said the placenta is breaking down but at a pretty normal rate.

I had GD with both pregnancies... DS1 was 8lb12oz and induced at 39w5d.

DS2 was measuring 8lb9oz just four days before I went into labor naturally (they would have induced me the following week at 40w3d)....

Well, he was 10lb 5oz!!!  So obviously those Level 2 u/s are not accurate!

My OB said that they will induce me at 39w exactly next pregnancy...
