new bed for DD...what size..

So we have been cosleeping w/DD since she was born and I now want to try and switch her to her own room. Actually no. lol What I want is to keep her with me but DH thinks we are all sleeping terribly and hes right as much as i hate to admit it. However when DD and I would sleep alone we slept fine. Sooo my solution is to get a Full size mattress for her convertible crib she never used and sleep in her room with her then gradually ease my way out...Im not really in a rush tbh. But DH thinks its dumb to buy a baby such a big bed and that she should get a twin like other kids.

What do you guys recommend?

Re: new bed for DD...what size..

  • I'm not there yet but my sister got full sized beds for both of her boys when they outgrew their cribs. This was if they ever have nights when they are really restless or sick or just need extra love and cuddles she can join them and not bring them into her room and wake up her DH. So you could suggest it that way......

  • Well, we upgraded to a king due to cosleeping, and hence had our old queen mattress around.  Rather than buy her a new anything, DD is now in our old queen mattress, on the floor in her room.  A toddler can totally take up a whole queen bed, I gotta say. :P  If you think that you'll be spending a decent amount of time in that bed with her, I would absolutely get something bigger than a twin.

  • We have a twin mattress for my two-year-old. He's a giant among toddlers, and I can still sleep with him on it for a good portion of the night. But! I would probably opt for the full-size, just so you don't have to buy a bigger mattress later on. hth

  • Yea i think ill be spending a lot of time in there even if DH doesnt like it...im just not ready to part with her! A friend of mine suggested that the only issue might be when were ready to have another and maybe we would need to get a smaller bed since they would most likely share a room...

  • That's what we did - used a full size mattress for Callum and I slept with him some during the transition - worked perfectly!  We haven't been able to get Eleanor a big bed because of space issues or I'd have done the same again.
  • Honestly, if we have a second, they will probably share DD's queen mattress for quite a while.  Not quite as nice as each one getting their own bed, but still enough space.

  • I think your plan of using a full bed for her is perfect. DS1 has a full in his room and it works really well when we need to go in to soothe or settle him!
  • We are going to be buying LO a twin mattress soon. The plan is to start with the mattress next to our bed initially, then move the bed into his own room.

IMO a twin bed is plenty big enough, but I slept on a twin sized bed until I moved out in college and bought a full sized bed for my apartment. It was never an issue.

ETA - I didn't want to convert his crib into the head/footboard of a full sized bed because I'd like to use it side-car for future LO's down the road.

  • My vote is for at least a full size bed.  Plus you have no idea when you do have another one and by the time he/she is ready for a big bed to worry about them sharing a room.

  • If I had to buy a bed, I probably would have gone with a full size. As long as the bed fits in the room, and you already have the frame for it, I would just buy the mattress that fits.

We had my old twin bed mattress and frame, so that's what DD1 was moved to. Then we ended up getting her a loft style twin over twin bunk bed when she got older. DD2 will be moving in there shortly. We still have the extra twin frame, so I think it will make more sense just to buy another twin mattress. I guess we'll see when the time comes to move the girls around again.

  • ds#1 has a full size bed and I think it was the perfect choice.  when he was learning to stay in his bed, I would lay with him for a long time.

now when I put him to sleep,  often lay with him for a few minutes since he asks.  it is also where we read stories.
