Non-talkers?

Is anybody's LO still not talking very much? DS knows about 5 words: Mama, Dada, Banana, Sit, and More.  I know every kid is different but I'm a little worried. He babbles alot and everything sounds like he is asking a question. I know he does understand what I say. Like if I say does he want a bubble bath he runs towards the bathroom for example.

I'm mostly worried because at his 15 month appt. the pedi asked if he knew atleast 5 words and back then he only knew 3 and she did seem a little concerned and definately wanted us to check back on that during his 18 month appt.

Anyways sorry this got so long!

Re: Non-talkers?

  • Dylan knows mama, dada and uh oh. I'm not worried. He understands very well and babbles a ton. He actually makes more sounds then what his brother did at this age.

His brother at 18 months only said "uh oh" and now at 4.5 he talks non stop and is doing extremely well in junior kindergarten :)

There is always speech therapy if you're really worried.

  • Pedi said they worry about spectrum disorders an other issues if kids don't have 4 words not including mama and dada by 18 months. Outside of that they chalk it up to "late bloomers" until 2. She wasn't worried at all about him at his 8 month appt because he met the criterion.

Yeah this. Rubes knows about 10 words max, only 4 of which she says with any consistency.

The pedi list said something about 20ish words but even he was all meh whatever.

He said it's a spectrum disorder sign but as long as she was actively engaged, shows emotions, understands and follows simple directions he told me to sleep well until she was 2. :)

  • Not much talking going on here. The thing that worries me is, the words that she does say are the same words she has been saying since she was 10 months or so. That combined with the not standing and walking makes me extremely nervous.
  • DS knows 5 words:
    Mama
    Dada
    Gus our dog
    Backpack too much Dora
Aflac he has an Aflac duck that says it lol
  • No words here. She'll babble mamama and dadada but not direct it towards anyone. She understands very well but does not talk.

I have a speech eval for her this month, but my pedi wasn't that worried. It was more of a "sure why not, won't hurt" thing.

  • We had our 16 month appointment yesterday (my pedi does 16, 20, 24 months). Mason only says mama and dada. I thought he had "moon" and "ball", but they never fully developed. Like others mentioned, pedi wasn't worried as long as he was engaging in other ways and that his receptive language was there. He understands plenty, he just doesn't talk yet. Another question that came up multiple times during the visit (on a written questionnaire, in the nurse's preliminary assessment, and from the pedi) was, "Does he know his animal sounds?" Mason does not make any animal sounds, but I told the pedi that he knows his cars sounds. Lol. He "vrooms" and "woo-hoo-woo-hoos" for his cars and fire trucks. I guess it counts ... it just shows what he is interested in!

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies. It helps me not to be so worried!

  • My son says none.  He knows what a lot of different words mean, I can say the word and he'll do the sign, or point to the object, but he doesnt say any himself.

I will start to worry when he's close to 18m-2 years.  Some boys just talk late

  • DD is 16 months and knows 3 words, 1 other than Ma-Ma and Da-Da. My DS didn't really have a 'word explosion' until 18 months so I'm not too worried just yet. I practice a lot with her and she loves to look at books so I'm sure she'll come around soon.
