FTM & 1st week w/ a newborn... 15 things I LOVE

Not that I have a lot of experience here, but for those other FTMs waiting on their little ones... These are my top 15 things that have helped me get through week #1 in one piece :)

1) Lansinoh Soothies Gel Pads & Lanolin (keeping nipple soreness under control)

2) The Miracle Blanket / SwaddleMe Blanket (her arms are too strong to swaddle her in regular blankets... hands are in her mouth in under 5 minutes)

3) Tucks Pads / The Peri Bottle (I think the peri bottle is self-explanatory... and the few minutes of coolness with the tucks pads is well worth the $5)

4) Ergobaby Carrier with Infant Insert (we've already used it for a few walks, going to the hospital twice (for lab draws), and to the grocery store this morning... she passes out the second I start walking, and I can put it on/take it off without help)

5) Vibrating Infant Seat (because she refuses to sleep laying flat on her back... she sleeps in this seat next to the bed and has yet to wake up on her own)

6) Glider Rocker with Footstool (can't even tell you how many hours I've spent here so far)

7) "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by La Leche League (has answered a lot of my questions and explained some of baby's habits with regards to feeding)

8) Breastfeeding Tank Tops (I've lived in them the past week)

9) Hospital Water Mug (way better than any glass or mug I have at home... and it's so big I don't have to refill it every 5 minutes)

10) Sleepers that snap down to the ankles on both legs (makes diaper changes WAY easier)

11) Cloth Diapers (can't believe how easy this has been - even DH is changing them with no problems, and we've had ZERO leaks/blow-outs)

12) Chicco Keyfit Car Seat (VERY easy to get her in and out of, strap adjustment is no big deal... and we've used the seat a lot - 2 hospital trips, 3 pediatrician visits, grocery store, etc)

13) Turkey sandwiches, apples, trail mix, and other food I can eat with one hand (since I'm always hungry when I'm feeding her)

14) Nikon DSLR Camera (to document this sweet girl's life - so thankful we decided to spend some money on a great camera)

15) MY HUSBAND! He's been awesome with getting me anything/everything I need, helping with dishes/laundry/cooking, changing diapers, taking care of the dog, etc.  I'm a lucky wife and Maddie has an awesome daddy!

Anyone have anything else to add??  I'm certainly up for suggestions that would make life easier :)

I'm a FTM and we plan on cloth diapering.  So i'm excited to hear how easy this has been for you.

  • I second pretty much all of the above!  Our LO arrived on Thursday, all what you've mentioned has been or would either be awesome!

  • You might want to look into getting the Rock N Play sleeper. DS also wouldn't sleep laying flat. Its a great option and safer choice than the bouncer.

  • I am waiting on baby 3 and I definitely agree with your list.
  • Totally agree with the big mug the Hospital give you, LOVE it!

I also love the "Total Baby" App for my iphone! It has been a life saver. I cant seem to remeber to eat let alone when the LO ate last.

I actually have the Fisher Price Deluxe Infant to Toddler Comfort Rocker... I just refer to it as that because that's what most people think of :)  This one is basically like the rock n play, just lower to the ground.

I'm definitely going to look into this... I've been writing everything on a marker board in her room but when I forget, the whole thing gets thrown off!

  • I can agree with a lot of these. The bassinet is something that she is not a fan of but goes right to sleep in her Snugabunny bouncer. I also love the glider for night feedings.

I think I need that app on my iphone to remind me of things though b/c there are so many meds for me and her feeding schedule to keep up with. Great idea!

Yes! I love our RnP!! DS won't sleep flat, either. Also, pacifiers have totally saved our sanity. I know some are hesitant to give their baby a pacifier because it may interfere with breast feeding, but I've had no issues with that.

Oh, and if you plan on pumping, I highly suggest a hands-free bra. They are kind of pricey, but worth it!
