Food Allergy

egg, dairy and soy free bagels?

I've been off dairy and soy for 8 weeks but started finding flecks of blood in my son's stool a few days ago.  :(  I'm also off peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish, though I had some peanut/peanut butter for about a week around Thanksgiving and then stopped again.  I don't really think that is the culprit, but who knows.  I thought maybe I could give up egg, but then I realized I'm pretty dependent upon Udi bagels, which contain egg.  I am VERY HUNGRY in the morning.  I need lots of food.  Any substitutes?  I'm not going to make my own bagels.  We are already doing a lot of extra cooking because of this and can't handle anything more.  I've also lost 10 pounds since starting this diet.  I'm 5'8" and 115 lb.  It's ridiculous.

His stool is being checked by the dr. on Dec. 10 and I know I'm screwed.  There is no way it won't contain microscopic blood at the least.  I know she will want me to switch to Neocate.  I thought she might be willing to let me try giving up egg for a few weeks and then if that doesn't work I know I personally can't handle any more and I will give up.  Honestly I think no matter what happens at this appointment I will keep pumping and hope my son outgrows this in a couple of months.  Whether or not I will stay on the diet while pumping and freezing I am not sure.  It would really suck if I merely had to add egg to my do not eat list and I threw away these last 2 months of major inconvenience (the diet is really hard for me).

  • Is there a Breugger's Bagels near you? Some of their bagels are d/s/e free.

I'm also dairy, soy, nut free and am having trouble with losing too much weight. Have you talked to a dietitian? I spoke with one recently and got some helpful tips for getting more calories each day.

Are you reading labels on everything you consume? Are you taking vitamins? A lot of vitamins contain dairy and/or soy. I switched to the Target brand Up&Up adult gummy vitamins, as they are dairy, soy, egg, nut, peanut, and wheat free.

  • No Bruegger's here.  Yes, I read labels on everything, with the exception of a couple of brain fart moments.  The only vitamin I take is Calcium + Vitamin D.  As far as I can tell it's fine.  I thought I had it figured out yesterday.  I went to get more dairy and soy-free butter for making cookies, and I realized the sticks I had made the last batch with were not soy-free.  I switched from Earth Balance soy-free tub butter to their sticks (easier measuring) and I guess I was asleep when I did it and they are not soy-free.  I don't know how I could be so stupid.  However, I'm pretty sure I made the cookies Saturday night, and the blood started Saturday night.  So that cannot be the explanation.  I ate them for 4 days before I realized it.  Other than eating a little more egg than usual, and the whole butter mistake which was just after this started, I haven't started eating anything new.  Tonight I saw more blood than ever and I don't understand why!  It was never like this even when the problem first started.

This whole thing makes me sick.  I think I have to switch to Neocate now.  DH said to wait until our doctor appt Monday, but I know what she is going to say.
