When to bottle??

Gabriel has 3 meals a day. Usually I give him a bottle and then offer breakfast about a 1/2 hour later. He then has a bottle before nap. He eats lunch around noon. He has another bottle around 3pm before second nap. He has supper. He has a bottle before bed around 7pm. So I never give a bottle before or after a meal. It is always separate. But it sounds like this is weird. So I wondered what you all were doing.

(If it makes any difference he takes about 24 - 28 oz a day)

Re: When to bottle??

  • Ian has a bottle when he gets up in the morning. Has breakfast about a half hour to an hour later. He takes a morning nap. He'll eat lunch then take another nap. He gets a bottle after that nap. He'll have a snack a little but later and usually takes another nap. He'll get up and dinner usually comes shortly after that. He gets a bath, gets pjs on, then is ready for bed not too long after that. He gets another bottle then. On a rare day, he might take a bottle in between his morning nap and lunch. He's down to about 18oz of milk a day...and his pedi said that's sufficient. So, that's our feeding schedule.

  • I try to wait at least 30 minutes after he has a bottle before he gets solids. A typical day includes 6 bottles total (about 5 oz each); one at least 30 minutes before each meal and one before each nap and bedtime.

  • A gets a bottle when she wakes up in the morning. We have breakfast an hour or so later she's usually so busy playing in the morning that its over an hour. She goes down for a nap around 930. When she wakes, I usually get her dressed and finish getting myself ready if necessary, then she gets her second bottle. She will eat lunch 12 hours after this and take her second nap. Has her third bottle when she wakes from that nap. Her last bottle is after dinner, before we take her up for bath/bed routine. She was regularly drinking all 4 6 oz bottles, but lately doesn't always finish them. Its more likely that she gets 6 oz of her first bottle, 4 oz of the next two and 6 oz out of her last bottle. I'm wondering if she's ready to drop a bottle feeding altogether.

  • 7 oz bottle when he wakes up

    2 hrs later eats breakfast

    2 hrs later eats lunch

5 oz bottle between 2-3 pm

    snack at 330-4

    dinner 5-530

7 oz bottle right before bed

-I don't mention naps because he's been all over the place. His feeding schedule is more consistent. Within the last week or two it's become more evident that food is actually taking on a more important role and is actually filling him up. I'm pretty by this age they should be making this transition

  • We do pretty much the same as you, OP.  We always do bottles separate from meals so that he will eat his meals.
