DS1 who is 4.5 yrs old is still wearing velcro shoes. Personally "I" would wear them if I could--but I know kids get excited about laces. He's not learning tying yet--- so not sure when it's appropriate to start him with them. Any ideas??
We just bought our first pair last week (he is 2) because I couldn't find boots with velcro that I liked. I didn't want lace because its just another step for me in the morning, ha!
Someone bought DD a pair of Converse with laces. She started wearing them when she was 2.5, but they are a pain. I'm not planning to buy her shoes with laces until she can tie them herself!
I think I read that it is something they master in kindergarten?nbsp; DS 1 still wears velcro shoes and crocs.nbsp;
I taught K and 1st grade, and generally in K kids are able to manipulate the laces. DD had a pair of lace shoes at 2.5 by accident, I donated them within a week and bought some more Velcro shoes, haha. Introducing laces before 5 is okay, but don't be disappointed if you have to do the work for a while.
by Kindergarten i would think. my grandmother was just telling me that she and her children had to learn to tie their shoes by... THREE. and they all did it by three. blew my mind.
DS has always worn shoes with laces. I just tie them for him. I prefer them because I can double knot them and he can't get them off as easily. He also has super fat feet so finding shoes can be so hard I can't be too choosy about Velcro or laces.

My 1st grader has a pair of lace shoes, but we send her to school in Velcro. Up until this year she's had no interest in learning to tie her shoes. She'll try for about a minute now before she gets frustrated and gives up. We definitely need to work on it.

I think DS's next pair of shoes are going to be tie shoes. He has been begging me to teach him how to tie bows. I taught him how to tie knots this summer. I think he might have the fine motor skills to figure it out now.
DD1 will probably be in Crocs until high school. DD2 will probably be barefoot until kindergarten. In reality, we have had some shoes with laces and they were just annoying. They couldn't tie them. If I double tied them, they couldn't take them off themselves. If I didn't double tie them, they were always coming untied and getting really gross. I don't buy shoes based on how they close so when one of the girls shows an interest in shoes with laces, I'll get them.

I got DD her first tie shoes around 18 months and have only bought that kind since. If she has velcro shoes she plays with the velcro until it doesn't stick anymore. She learned how to untie double knots before her second birthday so we never had any problems with her being able to put them on or off. I don't know when she will be able to tie them herself, but she is already interested.
