Working Moms

I got laid off today @ 31 weeks pregnant!

Our team merged with another in the company and the team was downsized and I was let go. I only started this job 5 months ago and bring so much to the table, alas I strongly believe being pregnant has a lot to do with the decision. Well, I get paid for disability and have a severance package to see me through the next few months, but it is a big blow to my career and I am just not sure how I can get back into the work force with 2 kids to take care of. Don't get me wrong, DH is employed and we have health insurance through his job, but this is just a very big blow for me.

Edit: My ticker shows wrong weeks. Need to update it.

  • Sry, you're going through this...especially around the holidays.  Stay positive, hopefully things will look up real soon; especially with your pending arrival!

FWIW, many companies use a "last in, first out" tactic when downsizing.  The fact that you have only been there for 5 months was probably weighed heavily in the consideration.

    So sorry!  That really sucks.

I wouldn't necessarily assume it was the pregnancy.  It usually takes about 6 months for an employee to be really valuable in a position.  They lived without you 5 months ago, so they're probably just thinking they can do it again.  Also - it's less personal and painful for your boss, because they haven't known you for that long.

  • I lost my job exactly a year ago. It sucked, being pg and having all that additional stress. Just remember that at 31 weeks, YOU are the most important ANYTHING in your life. Not your job, not the baby, nothing else is as important as you. If you are not healthy, you invite trouble.

You can do this. If you want/need to work then make up your mind and go for it. If you are able to take this as a sign and stay home with the kids, then do that.

Take a few days to just rest and enjoy the baby, having time to sit on the couch and feel where all the little parts are (is that an elbow or foot in my ribcage!?). Even though you have a severance, you can still go and look for a job. I went on an interview literally 1 week before I had my DD, and guess what, they still hired me! Being OBVIOUSLY pregnant means one thing, there's no guessing, no awkward say something or don't decision. Based on how close the interview is, you can either tell them you can start but will need time off, or you can tell them you won't be able to start until X date. I did the latter, just keeping in touch with them, send an email when I was home from the hospital, when the Dr says I'd be able to get on my feet, etc.

For my little man...I only knew you in my heart. D&C 3/1/11 EDD 9/8/11 Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Great advice and the foot in the rib cage made me tear up!

Good luck  I can only imagine how stressful this must be for you. More people are hiring this year over last, so try not to lose focus. But, also try to relax and enjoy the season.

  • I am so sorry. I wasn't pregnant, but I was laid off in March on my 1st day back from maternity leave, I had been w/ the company for 5 yrs. I was devastated, thought I would never find a job that fit me that well again. I was unemployed for nearly 6 mos, and in Sept. took an amazing job that I love. It really was a blessing in disguise, I am so thrilled that I got that extra time home w/ my baby while I was job hunting, I wouldn't change a thing now. I hope it works out and you find something better :)
