Best Labor Snacks

My birthing center really stresses bringing snacks. What did you find easy and quick to eat during labor that helped keep your energy up?

Re: Best Labor Snacks

  • Cheese.  Larabars.  Juice.

My midwives also gave me spoonfuls of honey to keep up my energy during pushing.

  • I ate yogurt and oranges in labour with my first. They were fabulous. They were both pregnancy craving foods for me, though.

  • My doula suggested those honey straws (like plastic straws ful of honey) for an energy boost. She also recommended some nuts (like almonds) and dried fruit.

I couldn't even think of eating during labor. I couldn't even speak and I could barely open my eyes.  I never had early labor though.  My water broke and an hour later I was at 7 CM.

All of this. I will probably bring homemade granola bars, honey sticks, and a gatorade like drink just in case. Last time I liked the granola bars and gatorade for the first couple of days PP when I would get hungry at weird times, so I figure it is worth packing either way!

Everyone is different. With my second I went from first contraction to pushing within 45 minutes. I drank throughout labour and pushing. I probably could have eaten if it wasnt the middle of the night and if my labour was a bit longer and I had a moment to think about food. In my experience with ds1, I ate until shortly before pushing, and the food helped give me strength which made the pain easier to deal with. But I know not everyone responds the same and that some women will vomit.

These!  They were the only thing I ate during my L&D.  I also brought popsicles and grapes but I never ate them.

  • Protein (bars, shakes, hard boiled eggs, yogurt) and honey sticks are my go-tos
  • The only thing I could stomach was Gatorade. I tried Coconut Water because it's so much better but Gatorade was the only thing I could drink.

  • With DS2 I had honey, granola bars, coconut water, laborade (mine was lemon juice, honey, salt, and magnesium + calcium). With DS1, I had a multi-day labor and had nachos and even a few bites of pizza, LOL!
  • I will be stocking up on nuts and the fixings for PB&Js (my go to meal!) I also would love fresh fruit like watermelon and strawberries. And I think frozen grapes sound delish!

I had a hospital birth with Ds and was only allowed ice chips.

Eta- after the suggestions, PB and honey sandwich is starting to sound pretty good to me :)

  • I was really nauseated during labor, so all I could manage was fruit and juice.  Be sure to pack something that you can handle eating if you're nauseated!  (And even though eating to keep your energy up is awesome, if you hit the point where you really, really don't want to, it's your body telling you it doesn't want it anymore lol--lesson learned!)

  • Honey during labor sounds like a genius idea. I'm definitely watching this thread... :)

  • I looooved veg broth. I wanted something salty.
  • There's no way I could eat. I only drank gatorade and water.
