STM+ how do you keep a newborn healthy with a sick toddler?

My 2yr old DD has a cold and this morning has diarrehea... I'm so worried she is going to get our newborn sick.  We don't let her touch the baby's face and hands, and try to wash her hands frequently, but is there anything else I can do other than just hope the newborn doesn't get sick?

  • My 2yr old has been sick with a bad cold all week, and now it seems like I'm getting it too.  I think you are doing what you can.  So far DD2 seems fine, if they are getting breastmilk especially they are pretty resistant.

  • Since Charlotte was born my Kindergartner brought home lice (EW EW EW!), both big kids have had pink eye, and both kids have snotted all over the baby for almost 2 weeks now. We've done a ton of handwashing/hand sanitizer, talked about coughing in our sleeve, and blew kisses to the baby. Somehow she has yet to get any of this.

You do what you can and I just keep reminding myself that any illness that any of my kiddos have/are exposed to just naturally builds their immunity.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I brought DD home and after a week my 2 year old DS caught a cold. Then DD started to get really congested, but pedi wasn't sure if a cold or just regular newborn congestion. It turned out to be fine either way. I keep the two as separate as possible and wash hands etc. I also dropped the playpen so DS couldn't touch her too much. And I would go upstairs when I nursed her so DS wouldn't touch her too much as well. Hang in there and remember that tons of us mamas are going through the exact same thing. : )
