First time discussing induction with Dr

I am 38 wks 5 days. Yesterday at my appointment, my Dr started talking about scheduling an induction. She said since I am due on Sunday the 16th, I have to schedule induction for that week 17th21st. She said they don't schedule elective inductions the week of Christmas. Does this sound normal to you?

If I don't go into labor on my own which obviously I still have time to do so, I don't like the idea of being induced before I'm 41 weeks. But, if they really won't induce the following week, that would put me passed 42 weeks which I don't think they would do either.

I told the doctor I will think about it and we can talk at my next appointment. I guess if I could schedule it for 12/21 40 wks 5 days, that would be the best scenario. But I'm wondering if I can just tell them I don't want to schedule it at all and just see what happens.

Both of my other kids were born early so I've never had to think about induction before. I'm not really sure about all of this but I really don't want to force this baby out. I want her to come on her own when she is ready. I guess Christmas complicates things though and if they say they won't schedule an induction the entire week of Christmas, than I'm not sure what to do.

  • You don't have to schedule it-- and if they insist on you scheduling it, you don't have to show up.  You need to do what's right for you and your baby, not what fits into the OB's plans....  Good luck!

  • Good grief the entire week of Christmas is out?!  Didn't they know that going into the medical field would mean having to work holidays?  I'm mad for you!  It would be one thing if they said they wouldn't schedule it on Christmas day, but the whole week is ridiculous!

You can refuse any medical procedure, so you can absolutely decline.  If you decide that's what you want to do and they give you grief ask to sign a waiver and that should be the end of it.  For what it's worth I would not agree to an induction so early either!  My office recommends inductions at 41w6d.

I tend to agree with this. The whole week? I work in a non-live-saving industry, and we don't schedule things on the 24th or 25th, but the 26th is fair game.

  • Why does the doctor want to schedule an induction? I think that's an important element to this question. Did I miss it?

  • I do have to agree with many comments as to why the entire week of Chirstmas is off limits. I would not want to go past 42 either. I would opt for before instead of after. Then you will have  an early present! :) Hopefully you will go into labor on your own. Try to do some home methods of inducing just like taking long walks.
  • I would call the hospital and see what they say.  I don't see how the whole week is off limits.  My doctor told me today that the closer to the holiday gets the more staffing issues the hospital will have.  My due date is the 18th and the doc said next week we can start talking about induction.  Good Luck!!

The Dr just said since I am due on Sunday the 16th, and they won't schedule inductions the week of Christmas, that I need to schedule one for the week before Christmas. So there is no medical reason to schedule an induction.
  • Geeze. I would be pissed if I were you. They shouldn't even be talking about an induction yet first of all and the fact that they won't schedule one the WEEK of Christmas is ludicrous. I would decline scheduling anything and if you go into labor before you hit 42 weeks you won't have to worry about it. And let's say its Christmas Eve and you feel like something just isn't feeling right or baby isn't as active or whatever the case may be....the hospital is still open, you can still go there regardless of the day and if they need to induce you they will.
Sorry your dr has put you in this spot. It's annoying that drs are still scheduling the BIRTH of someone around their convienience.

  • Thanks everyone. I think I will just not schedule one and see how it goes.
